The 2004 game fishing season got of to a great
start with fantastic weather and good catches
being reported around the country.
I myself fished the smaller streams around West
Bohemia, using Czech Nymphs and was quite impressed
with the fish that were caught and the fish that
were swimming around not to be caught. Why is it
always the bigger fish that are more easily startled?
As I said before the season got of to a great start.
The weather was remarkably warm for mid April and I
was surprised to see fish rising to flies and nymphs
surfacing; although this was only happening on the
smaller waters.
Unfortunately this fine weather was not to last. A
few weeks later the weather changed for the worse and
it started to rain, and rain, and...you guessed it, RAIN.
This had a drastic effect on the fishing. Firstly
the smaller streams were being soiled by the dirty
water flowing into them and the larger streams and
rivers were thus also being dirtied and the water
levels rose so that fishing became virtually
impossible.
By mid-May the rain had stopped and the water levels
started to decline. Although the small streams and
river were still no go the larger rivers in the area
were remained fishable.
The river that was fishing the best in west Bohemia
was the Mze; yes it is spelt correctly - MZE!
The river which winds its way from the German border
near the town of Tachov to the city of Plzen is a
medium sized river which was large enough to take
the rain that fell.

The river varies from ankle deep to waist deep as
it snakes it way along the troughs it has created
over the years and the man-made weirs that were
used to power the now defunct small companies that
are spread along it banks.
All along the river the Grayling and Brownies were
rising to dry flies. Not the biggest fish in the
world but the fish were there and feeding.

All in all, this river has provided some great
fishing of late with the rivers to the north of
the region having been too full to fish.

About Tim:
Born in London, England, age 34, 1.5 kids 2nd due in 6 weeks).
Been fishing since the age of 6 or 7. First day fishing
was at a location called Fishers Green in Essex. Dad
didn't catch anything, I kept catching Barbel. From there
was hooked. Progressed into Fly Fishing as I found Coarse
a bit on the boring side. I am hyperactive so I don't
like sitting around waiting. I am the more Pro-Active type.
Moved to the Czech Republic in 2001 and started a
British Travel Company (Prague Tours (UK) Ltd) of
which Czech Coarse & Fly Fishing is a subsidiary,
designed my first web sites which have now evolved
into what they are today. See
