Streamer Box Suggestions

I’ve started to experiment with streamer flies. I’m looking for suggestions for a box to carry them in from you guys that carry them with you regularly. I don’t think I’ve ever owned a box just for streamers.
Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce,

I found some clear plastic photo cases like these work well:

put a piece of 4mm foam in the bottom, cut some slits with a razor/straightedge and off you go.

Scott

I like the Cliffs Bugger Barn.

You might want to take that for what you paid for it though, as I don’t actually carry one these days. My son does, and I still have a couple. But everything I’m tossing these days is small and smaller it seems, so the Bugger Barn just isn’t necessary. But if I was carrying around streamers, that’s likely the box I’d go to.

I second the bugger barn. I love tying and fishing streamers my Cliffs Bugger Barn goes with me every outting. I will post a picture of it today its amazing how many flies the thing holds. It has everything in it from articulated streamers to single hook stuff depending on what section of a river I am on. Its also the only box I take with me for the smallmouth which accounts for the majority of my days in between trout outtings. They are also relatively inexpensive but quality made right here in the USA. I carry weighted and unweighted depending on what line Im using but the majority of my streamer fishing is done with a sink line and unweighted flies.

Be back shortly with photos,
Richard

Another vote for the Bugger Barn

I use Art Bin boxes, Same company makes the Cliff’s boxes without the abhorent jacked pricing to make killing! Plus it clear and not colored and a sheet of 6mm foam trimmed to fir the box and spray adhesive and got a nice box to hold them. You can find them at Jo Ann Fabric.
Like me I have a extra foam cut out for a pull out center for more flies.

Interesting, people, let’s see some photos. I just started fishing streamers in earnest this past Fall and it’s fun watching a fish attack the fly. Every year I make a promise to pare down my boxes, and the number of flies I carry, but it never works.

I would like to see some photos also.
Just started fishing streamers more this winter.
They’ve saved the day more than once.

I love Cliff’s boxes (have a few Super Day’s Worths) and the Bugger Barn is great but I don’t fish streamers enough to justify, so I make do with my own creations:

$2.00 for box and foam. Got another full of Circus Peanuts and Sculpzillas and one with PSCs and Slumpbusters.

Scott

Here is a link for the boxes that Flyfish Dog was talking about, only from a different supplier…

Well your gonna need a VERY large pocket for the box I made:D lol. Actually I built this box last summer for a “boat box” for my streamers when my buddy and I fish from the drift boat, but figured I’d post a few pics of it anyway because you can always find some ideas in what others do.

I started out with a craft bead style box from Michael’s and 4 sheets of 6mm thick closed cell foam (about $10 total) 15" x 15" box

I made a template of the bottom of the box out of paper and used that as a guide for cutting and gluing the foam inside the box. Made a carrying handle by using a shoulder strap from a duffel bag, dremeled slots into the front of the box, cut the strap and re-stiched it into a handle shape. Added a rubber post which a spool of Maxima fits onto perfectly (my fav streamer leader material). Added a post which a pair of hemos fit on in the lid because it seems there are never hemos handy when you have a pike in the boat trying to dislodge a fly from his toothy mouth. Also added a 2nd upper foam piece into the lid of the box for top water flies and jig style flies. This foam in the lid is replaceable since it is bolted into the lid.

One problem I have had in the past is hooks getting rusted because of putting flies away wet. So I added a foam strip on the outside of the top lid which has slits in it so you can use it as a fly patch to dry the flies prior to putting them away. The foam inside the box holds the flies the same way, with slits cut into half the thickness of the foam (same way C&F boxes holds flies)

Added a pair of nippers on a lanyard which comes through a hole in the front of the box but stays attached, dressed it up with some decals I made on the ALPS printer, and the end result is the Mother Of All Fly Boxes

That’s a good enough reason for me. Neat.

Wow, you people are very inventive. My mind is not geared to stuff like this, but I can always steal off of all of you.

If you’re not going to try to stick it down the front of your waders, you might want to browse your Lowes / Home Depot . . . 2–sided [b][i]!

Perfect!!!

[SIZE=3]p.s. Very innovative boat box Steve! Very well thought out!

That Dewalt box is a great idea. I gotta check it out tomorrow.

Unfortunately the perfect streamer box doesn’t exist. The larger Cliff Boxes are OK for the boat, but way to large for the stream. I personally dislike the small ones because they are hard plastic that cracks and breaks. The CF Umqua etc. ones are OK but heavy, as are the rest on the market. Might have to go the do-it-yourself route myself.
