Since I have been going back and forth with fly fishing for trout and smallmouth, I have been looking strongly at this pack with removeable boxes. I am thinking I could use it instead of a vest and just swap out fly boxes for whichever species I was going after. It looks to be large enough plus it comes with one box already. Just a thought and thought you might want to see it.
The Bugger Barn is a great fly box but it is big enough that it might not fit into some vests or packs. I you buy one, make sure that it fits into a pocket in your vest or chest pack.
for most of my streamers I use “Large” size foam lined fly boxes from Bass Pro or Cabela’s. They’re around $10 I think(?) and I can fit a surprising amount of big stuff in them. I have bought flat replacement foam for some of them, to make flat/flat boxes instead of flat/ripple. For flies which are too big for those, I just use Plano boxes with the long compartments. But, 6 and 7 inch long streamers fit comfortably in the fly boxes. I tie and fish lots of big streamers, so I have other boxes for storage which I keep in the car or at home, and boxes for fishing which go with me in my vest or in the kayak. For storage, any kind of box which can stay sealed against humidity extremes and dermestids, and which can keep the streamers organized is fine.
I’ve seen it in local craft stores; if not in sheets, they sometimes have foam door hangers that will work (they’re actually just about the perfect fit for the plastic photo boxes I use).
Hobby Lobby and Michaels both carry 2, 3, and 6mm foam. The 6mm sheets only come in red, white, and black. Think I saw some at Joanns also. I have made thicker foam from the above by spraying contact cement and laminating the sheets.
OT: Joanns also has the Ott lights on sale for 50% off…
Added: Hobby Lobby also carries the Art Bin box, that Flyfish Dog shows in his pic, in several sizes.
All great ideas and kudos Steve! Well done! I’ve a multitude of boxes, some DIY and other bought and of late I’ve been using a few of those little satchel style bags that bass anglers use for worms or spinner baits. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Navigation?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&searchTerm=spinner+bait+binder Don Griefe put me onto these when he showed for a Redfishing trip out on Mosquito Lagoon carrying a couple of these, complete with leaders, tippet and flies, plus nippers and pliers in about 1/10th the space my tackle bag and boxes took up!
You can put a half dozen flies in each zip lock bag there, plus smaller pliers, tippet and more and carry dozens of flys nicely in a relatively water resistant container which is important if you fish in salt water. :!:
Among the older boxes my favorite and they’ve been around for years is the Bonnand boxes of a clear green plastic with a brass piano hinged lid. They were slotted for small lures so you could carry five or six traditional streamers easily in each of five compartments. http://www.flyfishingnetwork.com/ProductReview/detail.tpl?cart=119944021878&sku=21176&db=ProductReview.db I was put onto these by John Propp , flyshop owner in Spokane and holder of many of the tippet records for Northern Pike at times when I worked for him.
I see Bonnand has a new boat box out and I may get one but would have to see it first in person and compare to the Bug Barn but as I’m now thinking of combining Steve’s ideas and a rubber O-ring sealed box I already have to make a waterproof, saltwater, easy to see the flies, box when I’m going out in a boat and not necessarily wading the flats.:tieone:
Another streamer option. Cabela’s has this for around $20, about the same size as the small art-bin box or Bugger Beast Jr. I especially like the idea of the third foam on the exterior. Would work great for boats of all types.
Although I do not use a vest much anymore but I do use a Orvis shoulder bag and my camel back Hydratiuon system which both can swallow a couple big boxes along with smaller boxes and gear.
Those photo boxes are cool and if you can find any older clear VHS boxes. I got about 2 dozen still in wrappers and like them a lot to. Constantly look aat Goodwills to find them.
The Cliff’s boxes are nice. While their Bugger Barn was a little too large for my vest, their CRAB Shack has the same foam setup as the Barn but is the size of the Super Daysworth. Bought one a couple years ago.
