Polaris /Ice Dub/ Angelina/Arizona

I received some Angelina fiber today…

Here’s my take on it so far…

Arizona diamond hair seems just like Angelina.

Ice Dub likely is made from it but it is cut up and has more interesting color combinations…presumably thanks to Hareline.

I’ve not seen Polaris so I can’t say.

i would venture a guess and say theres probably only 1 or 2 “manufacturers” of these products but alot more places that simply repackage under whatever name they want to call it and sell to craft and fly shops.

Hello,
These Angelina fibers look good, what did you take the staple or the heat bondable?
I ordered also from Polaris (January 23rd) but I’m still waiting for the parcel or an answer from them.

Hey guys,

How about posting a pictures for us!

Have a great day,
chris

Hey Duckie
Add Dave Skok’s Mega Mushy material to your list.

Does this help, Chris?

pechetruite…I just picked some colors I wanted and didn’t pay attention to whether they were bondable or not.

Ducksterman,

Thanks for the link !

Have a great day,
chris

Hello,
Following the message “New material” I ordered the product from Polaris on January 23rd and paid with Paypal.
So far, no communication from them, they don’t answer e-mail and on phone call, all you get is a message. Are they still in business or away from the Alaskan winter?
If any of you has ordered the material, did you receive it?
Ducksterman: Did you make flies with the Angelina fibers ? And what are the results?
They seems to be similar to the Polaris fibers (same colors) but do they behave the same?
Thanks for your help.

pechetruite…
I am interested in finding the equivalent of Hareline’s Ice Dub…It may be made from Angellina fibers but not in their present state.

Angelina comes in heat bondable and nonheat bondable…I suspect it is the same as Polaris but I have not tied any minnow patterns with it…I have cut up some Angelina and made dubbing but it is not the same as Ice Dub…

Currently…I’m working with someone who is sending me some samples of…Angelina…Crimped Angelina…and Crystlina…stay tuned…

Duck, dunno what kind of Ice-dub you have but the Angelina I have and took pics of is identical to the Ice I got from Hareline… only difference is they shred it in some kind of coffee bean grinder type deal and it has all sorts of sizes and deformities from the process… Is no mix of secret ingrediants in the stuff I have… Perhaps yours is different from the Ice-wing and Ice-dub I have… No idea…

If you look closely at my pics you will see identical fiber size and width, some of the colors have little ballish bits but these are just part of the process. I’m sure they process this stuff by the pounds, Since some of the texture is different it does vary slightly, most likely due to where in the bin your package was filled from.

RDL…I’ll post pictures too…but not only is the Angelina longer…[just like John Romher’s{sp} Arizona’s Diamond Hair…in fact, it’s identical in texture, length, and colors]…but Ice Dub is shorter, different colors and crinkled…
My coffee grinder won’t shred the Angelina.

The little dots are reflections and I’m not sure how this all shows up but the Angelina[Key Lime] is very lengthy…doesn’t separate like the Ice Dub.

You have to understand, Places like Hareline and Wapsi process there own materials, they do there own Dying blending, etc. Even though the packaged goods are derived from the crafting industry it does not mean it will be reproduced 100% identical. Some of the stuff is custom cuts as well. Searching for a 100 percent perfect match will not always yield positive results.

I seriously doubt the fish look at it as closely as we do, angelina is at worse a close match at a bargain price. The packages your comparing have been processed differently, the Caddis Green has most likely been dumped into a vat of Hot Dye, then placed into some kind of blender. I’m sure that is more then enough to account for the slight difference in texture.

Looking at my Ice-dub the colors I cannot find from the craft industry supplies are pretty much the ones with differing texture, colors which are a straight up match for the Angelina look to be same texture.

EDIT:
Follow this link for a little article that barely touches on some of the processing…

I also placed an order with Polaris on 1-23-08 and paid using paypal. I have yet to get my material and have not received any answer to 2 emails I have sent to them. Seems a shame. I guess I will have to try to find a good substitute. John

Though I can’t say for sure…I think this Polaris stuff is one of the three I’m investigating…as I said …“stay tuned”…I may be able to give you another source…I’m working with a gal named Lisa that is really trying to be helpful…

Spirit River sells this stuff as Lite Brite, no?

I got ahold of Polaris today. He said he has been sick and is working hard to try and get all of his orders out. John

OK, I got some samples today from ,Lisa [see below]

There is Angelina…Crytalina…and crimped Crystalina…

Here’s what I think…

None of them are exactly Ice Dub…as mentioned…Hareline must do some bulk processing and maybe even dyeing [if that’s possible].
Plain Crytalina is more coarse.
Crimped Crytalina is closer but still more coarse.
Angelina is fine enough but is a much longer fiber and not as crinkly.

Some of the colors are similar but Ice Dub has different ones.

I think the crimped Crystalina may be the Polaris stuff but have nothing to compare it too.

Lisa was quite helpful and *** I said sent me free samples…if anyone is interested here is her website…and products.

Anglelina has at least 7 different fiber types and dozens of denier thickness’s - it’s very hard to sort out.

Ice dub is the 15 denier Angelina “soft crimp” - the fibers are markedly softer than straight Angelina or the hot melt style. “Soft Crimp” is NOT crimped Angelina, it is an entirely different material much finer and softer than regular crimped Angelina. The denier size and fiber length can throw you as they make it as small as 7.5 denier and as large as 115 denier - which is quite coarse.

The most common length available is 4" - Ice dub has been chopped to 1" and blended in a grinder.

I have a post on the subject - I contacted the company and had them send me some of the styles I had not seen. http://singlebarbed.com/2008/02/14/will-the-real-mccoy-simply-show-hisself/

It’s very confusing as many of the craft stores that sell this stuff aren’t paying attention to the fiber length or denier size, so you get one color in 15, and the next color in a larger size. Make sure you specify the denier of what you need - it’ll cause less grey hair.

I did receive my material from Polaris, yesterday. The owner was sick and since he is a one man buisness, he was unable to fill orders for a while. He is a very nice guy and is getting caught up. I am very impressed with this material. I look forward to experimenting with it. Just a heads up to let you all know he is very legit and up front. John
