Picric dyed flies

  • how do you feel about them?

Some are discusted by the properties that the checal has others are delighted in the colours (sorry colors) that are produced.

Picric seems to come in and out of fashion in the UK but there are very few dyers willing to take on the task. Thy all know that they could lose the roof of their house in an explosion!

???huh???, boy what in the hell are you talk’in about.

Picric Acid as a dye for materials. the down side to using it is that it could go BANG. “Like other highly nitrated compounds such as TNT, picric acid is an explosive” wiki

I have had old chem professors in college tell me about them clearing entire buildings and calling the bomb squad when they find this stuff. supposedly about 100ml of this can be pretty ludicrously dangerous.

Picric dyed flies

  • how do you feel about them?

as long as someone else does the dyeing, theyre OK with me.

but anything thats gonna blow up my house is not Ok with me.

Loopy,
What do you think about using Kool Aid?: http://www.thepiper.com/fiberart/koolaid/images/colorchart-high.jpg

Loopy,

I don’t think I’d try the dye job myself, but I do like the colors of picric dyed materials. There are sonme lovely yellows and olives that I’ve seen. I’m a member of http://ukflydressing.proboards47.com/index.cgi? and there are pictures posted once in a while of picric dyed materials or flies dressed with picric dyed materials that look great. Wouldn’t mind trying a bit of those materials myself.

Are you the same Loopy thats a member of WashingtonFlyFishing.Com?

I have seen a couple of your posts on UKFD! I get around as you would expect! I have been known to make a nusiance of myself on WFF but they seem very tolerant of me.

I was invited to join a a swap over here (Mayfly) and I suddenly felt a trifle guilty about tying (I am not a good tyer) with picric materials so I thought that I ought to test the reaction over here before proceeding further. It seems ok so far.

Ron send me a pm and I’ll put you in touch with a site. In addition (I’ll get shot now!) come and register on the liveliest forum in the UK - FFF!

:sunglasses:

Our cousins across the pond have two odd fixations that I can’t quite understand. One is picric acid dyed materials which fetch ridiculous sums at at times, for materials as mundane as crystal chennille. The other is the unbelievable amounts paid for a single card of Chadwick 477 yarn for Sawyer’s Killer Bug. Of these two obsessions, the picric-dyed material fixation is the most troubling because of the health and safety ramifications.

Of course, all tiers have gone to odd lengths to acquire a particular material, so I guess this is just evidence that they are at least as crazy on the other side of the Atlantic as we are…

Just don’t put the material In your mouth.

There’s really nothing quite like it as far as dyed material goes. It has a certain sheen or glow for lack of a better term that other dyes just can’t reproduce quite the same. Some of them can come really close, but just not ever quite there. Here’s a couple of pic’s from other site’s that show the glow.

Regards,
Mark

Killer colors!!! in more than one way - regarding weird dyeing habits - think about whomever came up with tups indispensable - now thats another bug I wouldn’t soak in the mouth…YMMV

Mark,

That buzzer looks like a killer for sure. very nice.

There is not normally any problem, as long as the material has been very very thoroughly rinsed.

Some also “neutralise” the acid by using some baking soda in the first rinse. ( It is a mild alkali).

If your fingers become discoloured from handling such materials, then it has not been properly rinsed.

I stress that I do not know the precise reason why many materials dyed in picric acid seem very attractive to fish. More so than materials which are apparently the same colour when dyed with other dyes. It does however seem to be the case.

I did a series of experiments using various light sources and types on a range of materials, I still have the results on a disc somewhere. However, this MAY help to explain it;

@Loopy. Hope you are not thinking of starting any “Sweepstakes” on this board, or indeed on any others. You caused a lot of trouble for myself and others with the last one you started. Subjecting people to ridicule is not “funny”, it is merely pathetic.

Oh behave Mike and see the funny side! I have always been a fan of yours but you do seem to get in a few scrapes. Probably more than me!

Some people swear by it and would not go without it others don’t like it. I got my first batch of picric materials the other day i’ll tie some up tonight and put some pics up. Mike you would start an argument in an empty house if the bricks could talk. How come you always pick faults over everything?

There is no funny side to such nonsense. I am pretty certain that the owners and members of this board are not at all interested in your brand of “fun”. I most certainly am not. I think you indulge in gratuitous and often malicious trouble-making for the fun of it, and most boards simply don’t want that. Indeed, I have recently documented some of your efforts, as they may be germane in a court case for libel. You incited other people to cause trouble by posting to various UK boards. This is a proven fact, the posts are still there, and I have copies of all of them, and all references to them by others, as do the parties concerned, so there is little point in denying it.

Also germane here, your and others efforts have driven the owner/admin on one of those boards almost to distraction, ruined his holidays, upset a great many people, and almost destroyed the board. You have certainly damaged it very considerably.

If I were you, I would think twice before you try it here. Indeed, it might be a very good idea to go away, and leave these nice sensible people in peace.

I don’t need “fans” like you. Or indeed any “fans” at all. I subscribe to these boards because I am interested in fishing. I can learn a lot, and I can also help others. I am most certainly not interested in trouble.

Mike Connor

Before you even try posting any of your semi-literate rubbish on here, or the offensive and stupid images, movies, and other total rubbish for which you are well known, in argument, denial, or just to cause trouble or provoke others, these people wont mess about, they will simply ban you immediately, and a very good thing too.

People who use these boards are not stupid, and many use a number of boards. They soon find out who is up to what.

Mike Connor

And so it goes, thought I recognised the name, having ruined one board you are going to try the same thing here?

Wont work sonny. The first insults and personal attacks you launch here will be your last on this board.

People don’t want you yobs on serious angling boards. You merely cause trouble.

Stay in the playgrounds you already have, with people of like mind.

Mike Connor

I use picric on some of my flies and it seems to work well but most of my fishing is in lochs and some them are quite peaty.
I wouldnt try dying the stuff my self as im told it can be very dangerous and the wife wouldnt like it if i blew up part of the house mind you if it was the part she was in.
