Honeymoon suggestions please?

Ok, I’m engaged to be married this coming October 1. My wife to be said she’d like to go somewhere with Cabins, etc… as opposed to a more tropical typical destination. We’re going to be using my money for the trip, and I’m poor as dirt, so are there any places a newlywed couple would enjoy for a week or so that I could do for under $5000.00-$6000.00 U.S. ? I guess out of the country would be out of the question as airfare would eat up most of my funds. I’m thinking Montana, New Mexico, Colorado. Any suggestions? We’re not looking for anything too fancy, but it Is our Honeymoon, so I’d like to wow her a bit if possible. I forgot to mention that she’s not a fly fisher yet, and a place that caters to newbies would be excellent.

Hey BWagner,

Congratulations to the both of you from
someone who recently celebrated their 40th
anniversary.

We were looking at the possibility of

an early winter getaway this past year that
never quite materialized. But through the
wonders of Google I had found listings of
some wonderful opportunities in the mountain
regions of TN, NC, SC, and GA. I keyed on
trout fishing and was amazed how many
honeymoon cabins I found that actually sat
adjacent to good trout waters, as well as
recommendations for local guides. Many were
quite plush with all the ammenities from
hot tubs to pool tables and big screen cable
TV, King sized heart shaped beds and even
gourmet meals available in your cabin at
some sites.G All for well under your
budget.G Warm regards, Jim

WOW! Poor as dirt and spending 5 or 6 grand! Heck, take her up to Lake Placid in upstate NY. Lots to do and it won’t cost you half that . Congrats!!!

Plenty of places in that price range. Are you looking for a place with a lot of ammenities or just a rustic cabin in the woods? I know of several in Montana that would be well within your budget. Do you want to go on horseback rides too? When are you traveling? The later in October, the worse the weather could be here in MT, but since it’s kind of the off season there are deals too.

Benjo…I’d like to come out around the 3rd or so of October. I’d also like to save some of the money mentioned to buy a few “Presents” for us, I.E. nice new rods, etc…The money will be hard earned, but this may be the trip of a lifetime for us, so I think it’ll be worth it for me to splurge a bit. Also, horseback riding would make her very happy, but I’ve never done that before, so I’d have to think about it I guess

This is a really nice cabin with private spring creeks on it that are decent for fishing, probably really good in October with spawning browns. I have taken people there and also seen the cabin. Very nice, rustic feel, but comfortable. It’s cheap too, but it’s just a cabin, no restraunts or anything. Nice folks that own the place. I know of several ranches that you could check out, they cost more than that cabin. All of them have fine dining, horses, atvs and other activities.

Upscale (this ranch is on the blackfoot, very nice newer place. All the units have granite counters and down comfortors): http://www.pawsup.com/content.php[/url:ad837]

Very relaxing classy atmosphere, beautiful spot on the w. fork bitterroot (they don’t allow kids and you get a lot of privacy there): http://www.triplecreekranch.com/[/url:ad837]

If you’re into golf: (also has a private lake with huge fish. this one is on the Bitterroot River. Very nice accomidations, like mansion size log cabins on hillsides. I don’t know how much this one costs) http://www.stockfarm.com/home.html[/url:ad837]

Congrats on your pending marriage.

For the type of money you mention, you could put together one great trip to the rockies. I’d consider West Yellowstone as a starting point. You could get a nice cabin, a guide for a days and plenty of money left over for all the other stuff.

You live in MD so my thoughts are you will probably drive. PA is a good choice although I don’t know how much fishing you’ll find in Oct.
Perhaps VA in the Shenandoa Valley or in that general area.

bwagner,
Unless it is simply just to get away from the “right coast”, Poconos in PA, nice; certainly upstate NY - getting cool; Shenandoah mntn area; Deep Creek Lake in western MD has always been a family favorite; did a place in Pigeon Forge last spring - LOTS available in TN, NC areas. Envy the idea of the Rockies though. Congrats! The wife and I will celebrate our 25th this August. Looking for someone to send us on a trip, she is talking Alaska…any takers?

Live each day as if it were your last, some day you’ll be right!

October…I’m not sure what living in Maryland has to do with us driving, but I’d actually prefer to fly to our destination. We’re also interested in something maybe a little further west, as we may not have too many chances to do so after we start settling down with Children and all (at least until retirement I guess). P.A. is definitely a beautiful place, but we’d like to travel a bit more. Thanks for all of the suggestions so far though you guys, keep 'em coming please.

Prince of Wales Island, Southeast Alaska.
First fly into Seattle on a Friday daytime and spend the day walking downtown and hit Pike street market place and waterfront. Dinner at Ivar’s house of clams onthe waterfront. Super friendly town great for couples. Then spend nite at one of the less expensive airport hotels near SeaTac and fly out via Alaska Air early flight to Ketchikan, AK. Spend the day and nite in town to absorb the ambience of Alaska’s gateway. Then take a floatplane or the three hour ferry over to the island. Get a rental car load up your food stuff and head for a Forest service cabin to finish out your week. Steelhead and Trout available if you’re looking to take a break and hit the water. good luck and congrats!

I fish, therefore I swam.

You could always spend a week in Alberta at that time of year too, if international doesn’t scare you off. I could sugges a few places for you that are cozy and catered (or not) if you’d like.

You can fly from BWI to Reno on Southwest Airlines and drive from Reno to the resort (around 3 hour drive through some beautiful terrain). Lots of distractions in the area besides including Yosemite NP, Mono Lake, Mammoth Lakes and so on. Could also double up with time in the Tahoe area.

bwagner,
A whole lot of great place have been suggested but here’s another you’d both enjoy. Jenny Lake Lodge in beautiful Grand Teton National Park. It’s an all inclusive type lodge . Rustic log cabins, down comforters , no phone and no tv and you’ll smell pine smoke almost all day long. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included at the lodge restaurant. Jackets suggested for dinner but… It IS a laid back place. Horseback trail rides, fly fishing pack trips and all sorts of fun are available if you so choose. The only problem I see is the October dates. Y’Stone and GTNP usually close right about that time. But the benefit would be that you’be at the tail end of the season with lots of privacy.
In any case, congratulations to you both.

Mark

I’d rather be in Wyoming!

Vermont in the Fall is fantasitic. Most beautiful state in the nation during foliage and good trouting as well. Also Cape Cod that time of year is lovely and the Stripers will be hungry as heck and feeding heavily for their migration.

Check out “Whitney Village Inn” in Jackson, NH. My wife and I stayed there for our Honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality. It has been several years ago, so I am not sure what you will find but the surroundings were gorgeous for this west coast boy.

bwagner,
Check out this link www.lakelogan.org[/url:56baf]
My wife and I spent our anniversary there last year even though it is only 15 minutes from our home. The cabins are very nice and the staff is top notch and the dining hall serves 3 meals a day(included).
The lake is full of hungry trout and bass. I caught a 7lb largemouth and at least 20 trout(brook, brown & rainbow) over 15 inches plus a lot of smaller ones in our 3 days there. The river that feeds the lake is also a tremendous trout fishery.
The weather is usually fantastic during that time of year. Drop me an e-mail if you might be interested.

Hey Bruce, you cant go wrong with any of the suggestions here. Congrats dude.
