favorite thread size

hey guys,
just wondering what everyones favorite thread sizes are 8)

mine would have to be:
17/0 uni thread for 16 and smaller (i love to tie with 17/0!!!)
8/0 uni thread for almost everything
6/0 unit thread for salwater flies
p.s. could you tell i like uni thread !

for small stuff i use sheer 14/0
everything else is on uni 8/0 and danville 6/0

70 denier

Hi F & T,

I like most of your thread choices but I think you may be going a little light for salt water flies. I tie most of mine with 3/0 Monocord. The heavier thread lets you really bind material down firmly. I like that in saltwater and bass flies particularly if I’m working with larger bunches of material or big pieces of foam. 8T

It all depends on the fly you are dressing, for most trout flies between 10 and 20 I use Pearsall’s silk or UniThread, for larger I tend to use
Monocord or Danville. Some of my smaller dries I use one of the 15/0 denier threads or SpiderWeb.

For streamers I use 3/0 or larger, usually Gudebrod G Thread
For dries, nymphs, etc. in sizes 6-10 I’ll use 6/0
For dries, nymphs, etc. in sizes 12-20 I’ll use 8/0
Smaller than that I get out the 17/0

And of course there are exceptions depending on the materials being used.

For most flies size 12 or smaller I use UTC 70 or Benecchi 12/0. I like the way they lie flat if you want them to. For tying off a parachute fly on the post, I’ll reattach 17/0 and use it to tie down the hackle. It’s almost invisible on the post.
Joe

i also do that for my parachutes !
i use 8/0 for the fly and then to tie on the parachute switch to the 17/0

i have some 3/0 but i really dont like to work with it :?
and i have some kevlar that i have tried for spinning bass bugs and its alright, but i seem to just like to work with the light threads :o

i will use danvel 6/0 or 3/0 for spinning dearhair

but i like to use 8/0 alot most of my flys are over a sizs 18

My favorite for freshwater flies is 17/0 and for salt water 140 denier

It depends on the size of fly but it’s mostly Gudebrod 3/0-10/0 and Pearsalls Gossamer for the spiders.

If I EVER run out of Gudebrod it will be Danville.

Hi,

I use Uni thread 6/0 and 8/0 for 99% of my flies. Mind you, I rarely tie anything larger than size 10 or smaller than size 18, so those cover the ranges for me. I prefer the 8/0, but use both.

i tie just about everything with 25 pound mono… lol, i use orvis g thread or 3/0 mostly

I use 8/0 90% of the time unless I’m tying for the saltchuck.

Dry Flies, mostly Danville 6/0
Wet Flies, Nymphs, Streamers, buggers - Danville 3/0 is my default. Smaller than a 12 I often switch to Danville 6/0.

I’m really “calibrated” to using Danville 6/0 for everything.
I tried Uni 6/0 and don’t like it because it won’t lay flat.

i just love uni 8/0 for almost everything, but i use uni 6/0 to spin deer hair and for flies that need more strength.

nenbran

Over the years, I’ve shifted to utilization of mono threads for most of my salt and warm water tying. I also use it for some cold water nymphs.

isnt it a little on the heavy side though

I’m not one for different brands and sizes, but I have been told that the /0 system is different for most brands. So, when people say 14/0 and 8/0 and 6/0 and 3/0 I really don’t know what that means. My thread is Ultra Thread by Wapsi in either 70 denier or 210 denier. I know, big jump. I use the 70 for everything except large streamers and glo bugs. I don’t spin deer hair often, but when I do I use whatever I need that won’t build up too much on the hook I’m spinning on. Since I switched from no name thread to what I use now I have never had a problem with breakage. The smallest hook I tie on is 24 and I have never had a problem with build up. Anyone else use this and know what it corrisponds too? I’m kind lost as to what everyone else uses. Thanks.
