Don Bastian Video

Just received Don Bastian’s dvd, “Tying Classic Wet Flies”. A great big thumbs up! Clear, concise presentation from the simple to the complex. His exposition on married and mixed wings is worth the $20. One hour and 52 minutes of wet fly fun - you can’t beat that. I received it directly from Mr. Bastian, complete and autographed: what a deal!

p.s. Don Bastian is the tyer of the 499 wet flies in the book Forgotten Flies (2000).

I really liked it also, should of had him autograph it though,he handed it to me at a show! CJ

Where do you buy it? I’d love to get it.
Eric

Catskill,

Don is scheduled to be one of the 50 or so fly tyers at the Catskill Fly Tyer’s Guild ‘Rendezvous’. You probably can get him to sign your video there. Which reminds me that I should bring my copy for him to sign.

Allan

Allan,

Do you know/imagine he will bring some to sell also?

I haven’t seen the final list of tyers yet…any other surprises?

Yes great video. I have had it for about a month and have viewed it many times. My only comment is that I had hoped he would have spent more time on tying in quill wings. I hope he follows up with another video.

Hille’s in Williamsport, PA is distributing it, as is Mr Bastian himself.

Allan, RW here,

As you know I’ll be tying at the “Rondezvous” too. I’ve been awaiting delivery of my video for a few days. Hope it’s here before I leave for New York.

Hi group,

How do I order one of these DVD’s? Web site address, etc.? Thanks in advance for any information. I did a search engine and ended up with someone who works on leather.

Al, RW here,

Just go to Amazon.com. That’s where I ordered mine from. I just typed Don Bastion wet fly video in Google and they took me right there. I’ve always had better service from Amazon.com than any other place on the internet. Especially for books and videos.

As most know Don is my mentor and good friend. Don’s video is the best out there on the market when it comes to tying wet flies. For those of you that has been tying wet flies, I think you will find this DVD a boost to your tying. This DVD is really shows some great techniques that has been shown and taught to me via Don. This video is an invaluable source when it comes to tying those Classic Bergman wet flies. Only thing I will add this video is a tool and a aid to your tying. Wet fly tying requires practice and patience. With a good amount of techniques presented in the video any one should be able to tie nice looking wet flies with a little practice and patience. The nice part is being a DVD you can just look at the fly you want to learn and tie over and over with out having to look at all the other patterns. Don’s skills and teaching has made me a better tyer. I feel if you watch and practice Don’s tips, you will be tying some beautiful wet flies too. The price for the DVD is worth every penny. Lastly in closing, for all members on this web site that live in NY, PA, & NJ, you should think about taking one of Don’s wet fly classes at the Fishing Creek Angler in Benton PA. An entire weekend of fun and learning how to tie the classic Bergman patterns. I plan on going again for a third time in February or March 2006. Don is a great instructer and a hell of a nice person.

L. Williams, RW again,

The list of tyers is in the “Events Coming Up” section of this bulletin board.Tyelies (Allan) posted it in there about 3 weeks ago. It’s at the bottom of the page.

RW: Yep, he told me and I finally found it .

See you there!

The nice thing about the DVD is that it is formated in separate files, one for each pattern. Many DVDs are just one long file. With this set-up you can go to the “menu”, then the particular patern you’re interested in.

The DVD also taught me after all these years that the technique to a good head is not the number of head cement coats as I previously thought.

I also have this dvd and think it is great like lou said you can go to any fly you want. Also I must say a few things I already knew thanks to ANDY B wet fly seminar at last years Roscoe fish in.

For anyone’s information, here’s the brief review I did of Don’s video that was in the Catskill Fly Tyer’s Guild newsletter (2/05).

Allan

“If anyone wants to learn the steps necessary to tie the classic style wet fly, or just improve your overall tying, this is an excellent instructional guide. As I recall, Don demonstrates 7 wet flies. Each one builds upon the techniques covered in the prior pattern. Well, it did for me! DVD is $24 (inc. shipping).

Neat. I used to hunt deer near Cogan Station…I’ll make time to talk with him. I hope he brings some DVD’s along to sell.

Greetings fellows!
You all have no idea how thrilled I am to see such positive comments and nice reviews about my DVD. My dad, who taught my brother and I to tie in 1964, would be so proud! He passed away in 1977. That’s where I got my copy of Trout, it was my dad’s. A 9th printing of the first edition, given him by my aunt & uncle for Christmas in 1945. I treasure it to this day - with dad’s penciled notations in the margins, remarks about patterns, sizes. It’s priceless to me. it’s also the one I used for the recipes when I tied all the patterns for Forgotten Flies.
McSteff - thanks so much for starting this dialog. Glad you like the DVD.
Royal Wulff - you mentioned ordering the DVD and waiting for a few days to get it. I don’t recall you ordering it from me? 3/31/05 update @ 1:10 PM EST. DUH! I see now that you said where you ordered it from! Silly me!
L Williams - I sent a short e-mail to you on ordering it from me.
Lou T - thanks (again!) for your nice comments.
Everyone - My address, phone, e-mail is all there in Lou’s post. It’s also in my profile that you can click on.
Al Beatty - I’ve heard of you! E-mail to you as well. 3/31/05 update: We talked via e-mail.
I will have copies for sale at the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Rendezvous in Roscoe, NY on Saturday April 16.
The ones available at Amazon.com are actually linked there through FishUSA.com in Erie, PA. I got hooked up with them because a good friend of mine, Eric Lyle, lives in Erie and works at FishUSA. He showed me some steelheading, too.
Lastly - Andy - my friend. I owe you a couple beers, or dinner, or a free guided trip on Spring Creek, or something. You have done so much to not only help me, but also to promote what I feel is a genuine rebirth of interest in Ray Bergman and classic wet flies. Thank you so much.
To everyone - Fly Tyer magazine is doing a review of my DVD in the upcoming summer issue.
Al Beatty - it’s funny the other “Don Bastian” on a google search works on leather. It also brings up my name, about 130 wet flies tied by me Click onto both pages), and a link to the Complete Sportsman website.
To y’all - You can buy it from me, though I don’t take credit cards. It’s also available at the following locations: (also posted March 22 under “Guest Speaker” topic in the FAOL bulletin board).
Linesend.com; FishUSA.com; Fishing Creek Angler in Benton, PA (infofca@epix.net); A. Mangili Rod Co. in Warwick, RI (flyrod@cox.net); Sporting Gentleman in Media, PA (sprtngent@aol.com); and E. Hille Angler’s Supply House in South Williamsport, PA (570-323-7564).

I must close this post with Ray Bergman’s introduction to Trout.
“To you all -
The many good fellows I know and have fished with, and those whose paths may never cross mine except through the medium of these pages. This is my visit with you, our fishing adventure together. I trust it will be enjoyable, instructive, and memorable.
Whan I am gone, when all who now read these pages have passed beyond, I hope that TROUT will continue to live, perhaps to instill in future generations a love and understanding of angling.”

For more info on my background with Bergman, go to my posts (the most recent this morning) on "FAOL Bulletin Board, “Who tied those Flies?”

Don,

I did not get the email…so I sent you one

Donnie, Maybe you should consider contacting Jim and Deanna about taking out an ad on this site. Not everyone hits the BB…You’ve got a pretty good start on an ad right here but would get hundreds, maybe thousands of looks more. Think you better get some more DVDs burned.
…warmest regards, Bob
