My February fly will be a Crackleback. I’m still working on January - a bead head ribbed nymph/jig.

happy new year swappers, my ck nymphs are ready for the mail on Monday. Next up is the dry fly, and I am tying a local faorite, the Mr. Rapidan parachute.

I have really enjoyed this swap so far. Thanks to the other swapers who gave me info on their soft hackle…

November and January flies in mail today. Going to try spundun for Febuary

Working on the February fly, Adams. Have had trouble getting the dry fly hackle, finally got some Whiting 100 #14 for the grizzly, but still haven’t found the brown, and the neck hackle I have just doesn’t cut it.

Also having trouble with the dubbin, can’t seem to get a nice taper. Probably using too much:shock:. I have probably dubbed 25 flies worth, cut it off and redo with the same hook. [added] Tag line says it all.

I had the same problem with too much dubbing, try starting off with just a few strands of dubbing (i start with what looks like about five strands or so) and slowly add more as you need it.

yea, dittos for me too. Feel free to PM Steve, he will turn you on to some great info. He sent me an idea for a parachute rig made from a rubber band and hackle pliers, and it worked great! Also, my dry fly would sink like a rock only faster, and he clued me in that I was using rabbit dubbing which absorbs water. So I picked up some superfine and they will float all day in a cup of water! The number one problem for me, and probably most beginners, was using too much dubbing and crowding the head. I used to hate tying those little drys and now I merely detest them…:stuck_out_tongue:

Sat down Tuesday night and dubbed and re-dubbed a #14 until I was getting a nice taper. Went the other way, took my usual amount, cut it in half, then cut in half again. Seems like so little, yet covers so much. Working now on how much is needed for, say, 50%, 75% shaft length.

January nymphs are on the way. Yallerhammer nymph from the Southern Appalachians. It fishes very well for Brookies.

Happy Trails
