FIRST LIGHT

I know I’ve said that one really doesn’t need to get up well before dawn on my home waters. Truth be told, I do frequently crawl out of my bunk in the wee hours of the morning. I don’t do this to be the first one on a run, nor because there is an over abundance of anglers here. In reality, I really like the early morning, always have, always will.

NYMPHING - THE BASIC CONCEPTS

Many anglers feel that nymphing is too difficult for them. This is most unfortunate as trout spend 90% of their time feeding on nymphal forms. For those who decide to master the techniques of nymphing they find this style of fishing exciting and very rewarding. The nymph fisher is a very diverse angler who must learn how to fish from the bottom of the stream all the way to the surface film.

REVISITING THE CLASSICS

For a number of years I have wanted to go back and revisit some of the classic fly fishing literature that I had read years ago. Much of the material in those books I had merely skimmed for information during the years that I was attempting to gather as much useful information about fly fishing as possible.

A LITTLE CONSIDERATION

Every once in a while a post will appear on the Bulletin Board which is highly complementary to FAOL in general or to the administration. We have a couple on Sound Off right now which are so very nice it almost looks like we could have hired someone to say such great things. We didn’t of course but they do make the point which I was going to write about this week for me.

BACK TO STANDARDS

It was a glorious day. No rain for days and the sun was shining, I had the day off and the fish were calling me to come and play. At least that is what I heard in my head.

J. STOCKARD FLY FISHING

It’s that time of the year again and family members across the country are all asking that age old question, “What can we get the fly fisher in my life?” Well, a quick trip to the web site of J. Stockard has lots to offer.

A DAY AT THE DENISON DAM

The weather people promised a nice cold front for the Thanksgiving weekend. They promised global warming, too, but they’re usually a little better with their short term predictions. The blast of frigid Canadian air arrived on Wednesday along with a stiff breeze and some rain by Thursday. I’ve studied this phenomenon quite a lot and am nearly ready to publish my thesis on the matter: Texas cold fronts regularly arrive on or just before fishing days.

CADDIS

This weeks fly the CADDIS is from Frederick Hannie.
