Youth 5 wts

I built two of these rods for a clients 12 and 10 year old sons. They are Sevier 7’6" 2 pc (4/5 blank) 5wts. He just wanted simple wraps, a light handle and a shorter length. The all cork handle is fromJann’s, it does have some filler but a handle and reel seat for $11, they aint bad, and my client wanted to keep cost down. After building them I now want one for my own! It casts and feels like my 8’ 3wt Loomis, but it uses a 5 wt line and can cast into a pretty breezy conditions.

this is the fishawk burgundy with no color preserver

This is the wood with color preserver

I’ve used that grip on several bamboo"banty" rods. not bad for the money.
Is that a regular button on the end or a concho from Tandy leather. Seems like I’ve seen that somewhere before.
Very nice build.

I built a couple of 3 wts. with the all cork handle a few years back, I love the feel of the blank flexing the full length of the rod that you get with that combination seat and handle. Beautiful job I hope the kids are the type to care for things and will fish those rods for 50 years.

The boys are going to love those rods!! They’re beautiful! Lucky, lucky boys!

The last two rods I built had the same cork grip/reel seat as yours. As I was placing the little plug cork, I was thinking how kewl it would look with something else on the butt end … now I know what to use!!! Thank you!!

PS … what is this fishhawk burgundy of which you speak??

I like those! Not sure about the variegated thread but I like those handles. Where did you get the hardware on the handles or is that part of the $11 kit?

Betty, I think I have a bright and shiny Kansas Quarter I can dome for you to use as a butt cap. State Quarters make great butt caps. The nice thing is that if someone loses it, it only costs 25 cents to replace it!

Thsoe butt caps are from Tandy leather. They are 1’ heavy duty conchs($2). They make quite a few different styles and sizes. They also make light duty but they are just stamped sheet metal where these are are cast. The cork and rings come with the grips. Here is a link to the Fishawk thread colors.

Many of the colors are a little wild but, there are some that really go well with different blank colors. Wood and Burgundy-brown blanks,
Meadow and grass-green blanks, Ocean-pacbay blue And Stone with gray blanks

Thank you for the link! They sure have some dandy looking threads! Wow! Unfortunately, I can see many more rods coming from my table!!
