Big fish eat little fish.
Fish the edges.
Works everywhere in the world.

Most importantly, it is not the quantity of fish, but the quakity of the experience. HAVE FUN!!! and fish like nobody is watching you.

Tension on the line relieves tension on the mind.

Fishlux, is that you from CAG?

Hi there, welcome to the wonderfull world of fly fishing, my own top tip would be to join a local club. I wish I had done so early in my fly fishing days it could have saved me a lot of time and a lot of trial and error. Mind you the trial and error part is half the fun.
All the best.
Mike.

Just go fishing. No matter how much research or advice you get, our hobby is essentially one of trial and error. The best way to learn to fish is to spend a lot of time on the water.

  1. Thanks everybody! I’m sorry I didnt reply sooner I was having computer problems yesterday morning. Then yesterday afternoon I went out to a local lake that has a lot of open space to cast. I of course was doing terribly when I noticed accross the lake a guy casting what looked to me as expertly. I said what the heck and went over to him. He gave me an hour long casting lesson and lo and behold I started casting the fly and it landed straight (15 feet ) out in front of me. AND THEN…I caught a little bass!!!(out of season Well know I am hooked on fly fishing and you weill be seeing a lot of me here…
Again, you guys are all amazing thank you so much!!!

Rawfish,
Isn’t it GREAT? It is actually difficult to run into a flyfisher who is NOT helpful!
Glad to see the site won you over…ENJOY!

keep it simple stupid

never think that one particular piece of equipment will make fishing a success.

Less than desireable fish (no matter what they are; sunfish shiners, chubs, etc) are your best friend when learning to flyfish. Catchng them builds confidence.

Who has time for stress when there are fish to catch.

  1. Keep yer backcast UP! (Seriously!)

You’ll find that around here someplace :-))

  1. Might as well spend a ton o’$$ this springtime. You will anyways - and you’ll ALWAYS be upgrading…

Yer welcome.

Hi,

I’ve never seen a fish caught with the fly at eye level; false cast as few times as possible.

Go fishing as often as possible. You can read all you wnat and watch all the video you can etc. but it won’t all come together without time on the water. The more you fish the more you’ll have those “Aha! That’s what they were talking about” moments.

Keep it fun!

Remember what Joe always says:

“A chunk a worm makes every fly fish better.”

and

“Its not about casting, it’s about catching.”

Go about a foot and a half up your new leader and cut the tippet off. Tie on a small barrel swivel, and tie your tippet to that.

Don’t worry about learning a million different knots. Learn one; the clinch knot. Use it to tie on flies and tippets. Usually there’s a list with knots and instructions that comes with new line. Put that little list in the same pocket as your leaders for emergency use in the field and you’ll get along just fine.
