Yarn posts, used primarily on parachute flies,
can be formed as shown in bundled-fiber post
(p.132), but the technique shown here is easier
and creates less bulk on the shank. It’s ideal for
small or slim-bodied patterns.
Step 1. With a twisted thread (p.42B),
form a foundation that spans the mounting point.
Position the thread at the wing at the mounting
point. Cut a 2-3" length of poly yarn, half the thickness
of the finished wing. Bind the center of the yarn
tightly to the top of the shank.
Step 2: Raise the yarn tips vertically to form a
single bundle. With a flattened thread (p.42B)
take 5-7 tight wraps up the yarn post. Support the
tip of the post with the left fingers as you wrap,
releasing them momentarily to let the bobbin pass.
Step 3: Take an equal number of wraps back down the post,
and then take one full wrap around the shank, ahead of the
post. Leave the wing long; it helps in wrapping the
hackle. It is trimmed to the right height after the
fly is complete. ~ Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer
