Yakima River near Ellensburg, WA

A quick fishing report:

Fished the Yakima River near Ellensburg, in eastern WA. Winds 25 to 30 with a number of gusts at or over 40. Even with the wind, the PMD?s and March Browns were out in force and some Golden Stones as well. Caught a lot of fish, Rainbows, Cutthroats and Whitefish and some salmon smolts. The trout ranged in size from 9 inches to 17 inches. The bigger trout were very fat and sassy, they had a great time feeding during the winter. I had a brief hookup on a steelhead. Two jumps and then it gave me the fin.

I had a new 6 weight Thomas & Thomas Avantt fly rod I wanted to break in. I actually got in some dry fly fishing using it and casting a large Golden Stone even with the wind. Caught some nice sized 15 to 17 inch trout with it.

Overall it was great to get back out on the water.
