How and where does everyone store their hard-hulled kayaks during winter? It’s easy to pull the plug and deflate the inflatables, so that’s not too tough to deal with.
However, I don’t have a garage or a shed to keep mine in, so the front porch will have to do for me. I have it leaned/locked against the porch wall where nobody can trip over it and it won’t get snowed on. Hopefully that’s enough. I can’t use hangers or straps to keep it off the floor and it won’t fit down the basement staircase, either. Danged vintage 1920 house wasn’t built for a kayak fisherman.
Darned! Sounds like a tough one. Whatever you decide you need to secure it against theft as well
as protect it from direct sunlight. Maybe a buddy
has a bit of garage space you can borrow. Good
luck. Warm regards, Jim
I keep my canoes turned upside down on sawhorses out in the yard… locked to a chainlink fence. No cover. I’m careful to keep them up high enough so that even 3 feet of snow wouldn’t have the wood trim sitting in the snow. It would probably be better to put a tarp up as a roof over them but it’s definitely not better to wrap them in a tarp or rest the tarp on the boat. Moisture can collect and damage the hull as the weather/humidity/temperature shifts.
Hi, I am new to the site and the world of fly fishing in general. Since I cannot offer much to any fishing conversation, I thought I would help out with this question! I am an avid whitewater kayaker and have some knowledge regarding boats.
Definitely lean it on edge.
Try to store it out of the elements even if that is simply under an eve of the house or garage. The weight of snow can do as much damage as storing it flat, and while the plastics being used have come a long way, the sun can damage the plastic over extended periods of time.
Don’t stack boats on top of each other when storing either.
Hope this helps!
Hey ww, glad you could join us. Thanks for the advice. Given your handle I would guess you spend some time in the foam. I must say, kayaking and fishing is a great combination.
Back in the day…before this domestic, family lifestyle
When our flat did not have enough space for 3 outdoor guys and equipment, we leased a storage space for under $30 a month.
Recently, one college student asked me about a similar situation for his sail boat. After some brief exploration, the local marina was glad to hang his craft for the cost of $10 per month. Needless to say, they are glad to welcome potential for future business.
Needless to say, check your local listing for marinas, campground winter storage, or kayak dealer. You might be surprised at the response and new friends aquired.
I don’t store mine. I paddle year-round! Winter on the Ocoee River is the best time for World-Class whitewater! The Conasauga is awesome this time of year, as well! It’s also some of the best trout fishing of the year.
