!^&%$@#! Wind Knots!!!!!

One bit of advice given to me, which worked, was to not cast so hard. I took some power out and worked on getting smooth. My distance didn’t change, but way less wind knots.

As well, I find I get more wind knots when I’m pushing my limits with how much line I have out. Staying well within my limits prevents many knots as well.

After re-evaluating my casting techniques, I have been fortunate enough to drastically reduce the number of wind knots I get. It seems only to happen when I am really trying to force a cast, and then I have a whole slew of other problems… Tailling loops etc.

What I am having a problem with is my 1 weight. Using a 1 weight and 2lbs test flouro. I get a lot of wind knots, and also the “twirling” of the leader as well. I suspect that it’s because I had on an extra long length of tippet and thus the taper couldn’t do it’s job…

has anyone tried changing leader to assist with the REDUCTION (not the elimination) of windknots? Different materials or taper?

Addressing your original question, I suspect that because you are getting wind knots frequently, you may be pushing the rod forward at the stop and not getting the rod tip out of the way of the following fly line. Are you also hitting the rod with your leader?

I would get trailing loops & hence wind knots when I’d get tired after a long day of casting. When I started the day I had no problems. That made it easier for me to see what I was doing different. I found that I would unconsciously( spell ck.used) open up my stroke & let the rod drop on my backcast & then on my forward stroke I compensated by powering too fast.
& too late. . This put an arc in the rod tip plane of travel & the line just followed the rod tip. I know what I’m doing wrong, now if I could just stop doing it I’d be happy…
