Cute little fly. I have a small “mouse” pattern that I tie for Bluegill fishing. It’s based on the Splinter Mouse pattern. I play around with the tail material, this one happens to have a bit of rubber toy tentacle for a tail. I suspect that this would also work well for Brown Trout or even good sized rainbows.
Great fly/report!
Thanks for posting that link. Through it, I discovered his fuzzling technique.
You’re welcome. He tied some interesting flies; I was sorry to hear he passed away.

Scott,
Thanks for posting this ingenious use of a foam cylinder! It’s good to know that fish like it too.
Where do you get the foam cylinders that you use to tie this fly? What size cylinder did you use for that hopper?
Thanks,
Ted
Ted,
I used 3/16” cylinders; think they were Wapsi.

Oh, thanks for that vid!
I typically fish GFA Foam Hoppers in size 14 for Bluegills. This might be another pattern that can be very useful for such a small size.
Water + fly

= fish

Added some grizzly hackle; doubtful that the fish care one way or another.

Scott,
“doubtful that the fish care one way or another” covers MOST of my fly fishing philosophy. I rest on my hunnert + years of experience to exercise “common sense” . I KNOW what they “should” eat and that’s what’s on the end of my tippett ,usually :).
The ONLY place I often leave totally frustrated is on Flat Creek in the National Elk Refuge just outside Jackson . It’s got to be a size 66 and heaven forbid the hackle is more than 1/16 " above the hook shank and the color is just off pale brown and your lapels don’t have grass stains fom crawling to straemside. Do all that and you’ll hook up. Got three in 30 years so please don’t EVER call me a “giverupper”. But I digress…Nice fly Scott.

Mark,
I fished Flat Creek for a few hours with my neighbor a few years ago. I didn’t get anything; my highlight was a half-hearted refusal, after trying 4 different emerger patterns, from a cutt that might have gone 10”. My neighbor got 2 over 20” by jigging a saltwater Clouser along undercut banks; he’s an excellent caster and fisherman but he also has a predator’s instinct.
