Why?

I don’t double haul all the time, but I’ll nearly always (at least) single haul, even on very short casts. It helps with turnover, accuracy, presentation and everything else.

I haul as needed. I don’t need or even want it all the time.

Larry’s where I learned to cast for distance with Pike gear,Through an older video.and where the 30ft haul & shoot came from…The man can cast. But full out distance that he was preaching was not nearly as important as to the emphasis he placed on it…or as I had took it he was placing upon it?..I Practiced Nothing but that for about a full year before really giving Flyfishing a real try…Not saying I wasted my time at all…as I feel in the long run I gained alot for it!

I never said the word wrong!, Nore do I like it implied. We all had our zealous points when starting out and learning this sport, I think I did well in the chooseing of mine!
I do believe we all get fanatical at certian times and or with certian aspects of this game.

I typed out a response to all of this but it was so verbose I could hardly follow it myself.

So…

Ignoring [for now ] the distance thing I’ll just say that I think there is a ?HINGING? effect as you go from the WF section of a line to the running line.

OK take your shots…but

Respect Your Elders!

ducksterman, that could be why the folks at Scientific Anglers and others make line specifically for distance casting with LONG bellies and a long, gradual rear taper that ends in a super-thin running line.
If nothing else, the S.A. Expert Distance line sure makes life easier for distance casting.

LF I have to admit to hauling a line now and then but I have been known to cast a fly 5 or 6 time to a rising fish without ever drying it but for the cast to pick it up and lay it back down on the water. One shot. I also find that I will hold 30 or so feet in the air without hauling and just fish that line adding a bit or taking away as needed. Just different ways of doing things. No biggy there.

billknepp- There are times that I will cast a long line to a rising fish because of the way they may be holding or for other reason. But I do believe in getting as close as you can to a fish before fishing to it. It keeps more line off the water which means less drag. Which means OH! you get the idea I am sure.

JC Will you hold my hand when I am casting? I need help Bad. Sorry I ment LF there. Ron
