Who is fishing this weekend? For what? And where? I am planning on meeting a friend Tuesday at Quaker Creek (not named because of my church affiliation but because of my reaction to the rattlesnake I met the last time I fished the stream) to fish for wild rainbows. California has a general season and most of the rivers are closed but for some reason southern California is exempt.
im hitting the Lower Owen’s River Wild Trout section outside of Bishop, CA both saturday and sunday. the wife is out of town with the kids for the whole weekend, so all “honey-do’s” are put on hold .
the weather’s been nice all week with temps reaching into the 60s in bishop, so midges should be coming off all day and maybe a few calibaetis towards afternoon. cant wait !! water temps are up, ambient air temps are up, and winds are down. should be a great weekend, with everyone else staying home for the “Big Game”.
Oh I miss those incredible winter days on the lower owens! That fishery is fantastic, and the midge fishing…sublime. Have a blast.
Personally, I’m going to hit the Big Thompson here in Colorado for some midge fishing. I’ve got to do something about this terrible case of cabin fever!
Have a great weekend everybody regardless if you hit the water or not.
Love this time of year! I hit the first river with my 8wt for steelhead for a couple hours. Then I head for the next river in time for the BWO hatch and the the brown stone flies have been out in force. I’m taking the 5 wt RPL this time. (It has been weird going from casting an 8wt with a heavy sink tip to a 3wt with a floating line.)
I was just out casting in the snow for awhile. I thought some practice was in order since they are calling for a high of 50 on Sunday. So I hope to fish during the day and the watch the EAGLES win the Super Bowl in the evening.

Ice still on the water here. It was 50 today and forecast says 60 tommorrow. I am a novice who just bought my first “good” rod and can’t wait to give it a go. With a little luck the ice may part by Sunday.
the adult midges on the owens have been unbelievable this winter. I actually got my biggest fish from the Wild Trout Section so far just a couple weeks ago, right before the huge snowstorms hit. beautiful 17" brown, and completely wild. he took a tiny quill body cree midge, #28. just barely sipped it. what good times.
if you get the chance to come back out this way, look me up. well wet a line together and hopefully enjoy some decent hookups.
I’m planning a relocation to Reno this spring. I’ll definitely look you up when I get back, it’s only about 4 or 5 hours to the lower Owens from Reno. Plus there are so many places to fish on the east side. I can’t wait to get back. I’ll be in touch.
My e-mail is john@geomega.com. Feel free to drop me a line anytime.
Thanks for the reply and for bringing up some good memories.
when you get to reno, remember that im in the mammoth lakes area. with about 50 lakes and countless streams and rivers within 45 miles of my house, we can definately find someplace to fish. and, at the right speeds , reno is only about 2.5-3 hours from my house. i can do it in under 2.5. I try to avoid the lower owens during the summer. just too durn hot for my blood. but i fish the upper owens, rush creek, hot creek, rock creek, convict creek, reverse creek, sherwin creek, laurel creek, lee vining creek, tuolomne river, merced river in yosemite…you get the idea.
Got my feet wet this afternoon and my oh my how great it felt. Snow on the banks, all by myself, clear and cold water, but no trout. I tried midges, wooley’s and nymphs. I must have not listened to Reuel and I fished where they ain’t. Oh well, it was fantastic to get out on a warm and sunny day. I can’t wait till the ice is off the ponds.

Just got in from Lm Bass fishing. Caught two and i am really surprised i did since there is still ice over part of the lake. Did it on a craw colored clouser. I was just fishing for the heck of it and didnt expect to hook up. Weve had 2 days of warmth here in indinana just enough to thaw the ice.

Yep-Just finished a 4 hour session wading the Pacific surf zone. Great workout-lots of casting and about a half dozen barred surf perch C&R’d. Lots of grabs. Great sport!

i made it out today. fished with a couple of good friends and co-workers on a stream in the northern front range. also got to take the new winston b2x 4 wt. out for teh second time. great fun, but very cold and windy today.
managed to c&r probably 30 or so rainbows, but no browns for a change. rainbows are gorgeous right now - must be right on the verge of spawning.
Rode the mountain bike up Waterton Canyon today, S. Platte Co. Caught a couple on #22 glass bead zebra emergers. Usally see big horn sheep, but, none today. Could feel the temp change in the corners that don’t get sun. Still some snow on the banks. Felt good!!!
