You are at a charity event and buy a $1 ticket that turns out to be a winner. What you win is the opportunity to choose any piece of equipment from the head table that you want.
There are 4 rods on the table. They are all the exact weight that you prefer to cast in the number of pieces that makes the most sense to you. Coincidentally they all are also the exact flex that you like. There is nothing about the specs of any of the rods that shouldn’t work for you.
The only catch is that you cannot resell it.
One is a Martin, one is a TFO, one is a St. Croix Avid and the other is an Orvis T3.
Which rod do you take and why? Remember - it only cost you a buck and that went to charity.
Which to choose. I am afraid I would probably go ahead and take the TFO. Although I might be passing up my only shot at ever owning an Orvis Rod, I still think I would grab the TFO and move on.
Mostly cause I am kinda like Dudley. I have been wanting a TFO for a while, but I would kick myself for the next X number of years for not taking the Orvis. I have never wanted an Orvis. Just me. Now, had you said Winston. . . .
Under the terms described in Eponymous’ original post I would pick out the rod that I thought was the best looking. Not much of a response, but that is what I would do and I imagine a lot of others would do the same.
St.Croix Hands down…Especially if it were a legend Ultra…but avid would work…My experience with Orvis Rods was less than Peachy…
“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best
What a happy choice to have to make. I’ve always had a preference for Orvis but Clearwaters rather than T3’s. One of the reasons that I like Orvis is the 25 year replacement policy. 8T
You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.
I liked the T3 when I tried it and the TFO is similar to one I already own. I have NEVER fished a rod for 25 years. By that time new technology has come and created something much more interesting to play with, so 25 years is sufficient (bamboo excepted from that comment)
