I was fishing along Scusset Beach, Cape Cod about sun down when I hooked a fish. It didn’t put up much of a fight, so I figured that it was a tinker mackerel since I had been catching those on and off. Then it came jumping way up out of the water. It was about 16"-18" long and silvery looking, but no stripes. It put up a weak fight but broke me off (20# flouro) at my feet after zooming 'round and 'round me. What the heck was it??
Could it have been a sea run trout? Don’t know if they are in the area you were fishing but they are off the South Shore and the Cape in places.
jed
sounds like a shad

princess anne, eastern shore of md.
i’d say shad, too
If the hook pulled out it was most like a shad. They have very soft mouths.
the hook didn’t pull out, the fish broke my fly off at the clinch knot. It was a 20# flourocarbon leader
Hickory shad
Plenty around now, and the big bass are going for them big time.
May the fish that you catch always be larger than the hole in your net
