Well I got this fly at bass pro shops a few months back because it looked like it would work. It caught me a fair share of fish. So when I found the materials to tie more, and I did, I couldn’t remember the name of it. Anyone know? The one on the left is the original, the 4 on the right are ones I tied. You can see the 8 legs and foam indicators.
Looks to me like a Chernobyl Ant
yep 100% chernobyl ant
Welcome to FAOL. Very nice reproductions of the Chernobal Ant. Just a suggestion, you might want to make your indicators out of a bright colored foam (it doesn’t have to be round either), as the only purpose they serve is for YOU to see the fly on the water. I just use flat foam for the entire fly, and usually use the indicator colors shown on the original fly.

One of my favorite and most productive flies…the Chernobyle Ant!
I like them so much that I bought one of those cutter sets to make the bodies consistent.
It’s another one of those ‘Never Fail’ flies. As far as I know, they catch everything from bluegills to pike. I’ve caught trout, sunfish, crappie, large and smallmouth bass, and carp on them.
My best colors have been black over yellow, with yellow & Black banded legs.
Next best is green over yellow.
My top 3 best producing flies that I never leave home without:
- Clouser Minnow
- Wooley Bugger
- Chernobyle Ant

Panfisha;
Welcome to FAOL, hope you enjoy yourself here! Obviously, you’ve just seen how helpful the site can be and how readily everyone is to help one another enjoy their love of fly fishing/tying.
Nice ties, by the way, of the C-ants!
Well thanks for the info!
And the reason I used blue and green indicators was those were the only colors I had. A black indicator isn’t much use. Next time I’m out I’ll find some orange foam.
Panfisha welcome to FAOL and those Chernobyle Ant’s look great.
