What can I make outta this?

Talked to a gal today who says she has an Emu hide with lots of feathers on it, and wants to know if I want it. Anybody done any tying with Emu, and if so, what patterns are conducive? I’d suspect warm water or streamer stuff, but I’m ignorant on this one. Any help?

TAKE IT! i have never used emu but i’m sure there would be plenty of uses for it! maybe you could even make emu dubbing

use it as you would marabou and cdc even. It makes lovely long wings on big flies.

Tim - great pics of emu flies! Thanks.

I have some emu feathers that I think are very different from what was used in those pics (from another part of the emu no doubt). These are very spikey and the shafts are VERY long…would maybe work on a wooly bugger if you wanted stiffer hackle to move water when the bugger is stripped or anywhere you wanted really spikey hackle…

Thanks guys! I’ll run those feathers to ground. Keep em comin’!

i had a friend send me a few . from one of his freinds . depending on the feather

you can use them like ostrich hearl , marabu, the ones i got from him are rather spikey tried using it for hakle but didn’t realy like it
so i use them like you would biots . im shure you can use the quil for bodies .
other then that i cant help you out to much .

Nymph pattern

Hook size 4 to 10
bead head or not
tail 4 peacock sword fibers
Tie on emu feather alnd palmer it up the hook
Tie off.
This is a good warmwater fly.

Here is a fly that I have used for trout as well as crappie.

It’s a big bird…if you can’t find some of the feathers on there useful for something, I’d be VERY surprised.
