WATERPROOF dubbing material

Mucho Thanks!!!

“Once the fly gets slimed, though, and rinsing isn’t enough, I have to wash the fly in soapy water. Once this is done, the fly returns to it’s pre-slimed condition.”

“Old timers” used a more basic method. They would gently chew on the fly, with a lot of saliva soaking it. Enzymes in saliva can break down the slime. Me? I prefer my on-stream granola bar.

I’ll pass on that one…lol

The correct word in this case is aDsorbent. For those who do not know the difference between aBsorbent and aDsorbent, I suggest you go to your local pharmacy and buy a box of ABSORBENT COTTON and a box of ADSORBENT COTTON and go home and make a ball f each and the dunk them into a pan of water. This should provide a good insight into what we are talking about when we talk about materials being waterproof, etc.

Cheers

Rain-x (causes water to bead up on car windshields) works great, too. Probably the same stuff as the grout sealer.

I have used shake to dry out flies that were Ginked earlier, but I would be slow to Gink a fly that hadn’t dried fully and I don’t think that shake does that that. Remember that if you Gink a wet fly you trap the water in. Not only is your fly heavier, but it might be more prone to rust and rot. I would presume that Gink would work in 32 degree weather, if you can get it out of the bottle. I concede that I spend minimal time outside in 32 degree weather. Of course, we don’t have all that much of it. Local highs are supposed to be in the 50’s today.

Let us know if Gink works in the cold.

P.S. I always flick off the remaining bit of shake. I usually hold the fly by the tippet at the hook eye and flick the bend of the hook with my fingernail.

If your using Rain-X and you’ve used Pantone or other “permanent” pens, beware. I’ve had Rain-X take the color right off.

Has anyone tried the “new” formula SCOTCHGUARD"? The old formula stuff worked GREAT! When I heard that the EPA was forcing a change in the formula, I dashed out and bought two cans while the “old” stuff was still available (my great-great-grandkids will be using what I have). I have no need to buy the “new” formula and am curious if anyone has any experience with the new stuff.

Thanks,
Frank
