We’ve got some spots where you don’t need a boat or kayak in order to experience some pretty good fishing. Just a couple of hours south of my home in Sarasota, I fly fish spots along Tamiami Trail by foot. Best spot is off Loop Road.
We use 3- and 4-weight fly rods, floating lines, 7 1/2-foot leaders and Myakka Minnows. We catch mostly oscar, but also Mayan cichlid, largemouth bass and bluegill. It can be a hoot.
It’s also very good when it’s too windy to fish elsewhere.
One warning: please take a careful look before you get out of your vehicle. Alligators like to lie in the sun along the road during the winter.
Not only is the fishing good, but the scenery is great.
Cool photos. What color Myakka Minnow’s work best for you?
Depends on where I’m fishing. In clear water, I like gold or silver. In The Everglades, I prefer copper or black.
FloridaFly–your first name wouldn’t be Buz, by any chance, would it?
George
Looking at the pictures that followed, I don’t believe it is the same Buz that I knew from some time ago.
Nice photo’s and report, keep us drooling.
No. It’s Steve.
Thanks, Steve.
Knew a fellow fisherman that used the “handle” FloridaFly. Haven’t heard from him in about 25 years so I just thought I would give the thread a shout-out.
Keep up the fantastic fishing Steve.
George
Actually Steve had a forum of his own and if I remember it was called florida fly or florida freshwater fly. Just saying…
