Well I had a good day Friday…got out before 1p, stayed till around 5p and hooked 4 'bows up to about 18", all on Joe V’s gift of orange stimulators, rod was a Fenwick 5wt 2pc 8.5 ', gift from a friend on the RR here, the reel was a gift from a woodcutting friend here, the furled leader was a gift from our own ‘Backcastwards’, the backing came with the reel, the line was one of the 7wt Green Mt. from Orvis that I bought a year ago.
I put the combo together to honor those friends that thought to give to another and will fish it all the while I’m here.
Did sheetrock yesterday and was getting in the car to go to the lake to try for smallies…same outfit…and the RR bud’s call came and he had to jet to the yo at K. Falls.
I’ll be here till around the 3rd so anyone close is welcome to get in touch for a day on the water. Been wet wading and not bad south of me but under the dam is a bit nippy and I spend most time walking, taking potshots at easy runs with gravel bars or very shallow. not bad though, day temp today will go 70+ again…
Thanks jimsnarocks, hadn’t ever looked at that website…found a few posts about the upper sac too…prolly met some of those ppl today and Friday…was 'sposed to go to the lake but went to Dunsmuir instead…hooked two, only had to release the
larger one…'bout a 15-16 bow of course. Lots of ppl
but I don’t mind…saw a guide friend there from OR that
I hadn’t for a while. Great day…went about 76 in town.
I’ve fished that area from Shasta to Whiskey and some creeks and ponds with a nephew who lives in Redding. Hope you visit Castle Crags while you’re there. Jim
Well I usually stay pretty close to the house…did good today above Dunsmuir…several different places. Do you mention the Crags for any particular reason? I’ve been there a number of times over the years including truckin’ over the hill to Weaverville that way. Fun drive.
Oh, ok…by the old wrecking yard…I’ve fished around there a couple of times. Thanks Jim, I’m havin’ a great time up here. Let me know when you might come up. The river is open year round now of course.
Well dang ! Yep, one of these days…I’ll be here till about the 3rd unless it threatens a bunch of snow. Got trout yesterday in Duns…stopped by Ted Fay’s Fly Shop…having a great time in spite of sheetrock, yardwork and painting etc.
Next time Rich…shoot me a pm ahead of time…I’m
free to move about the country !
Cheers,
MontanaMoose
P.S. We both missed a 'boo
event in Dunsmuir, F, S & S
and I fished right through it,
din’t even know it was on !
Fished the Upper and Lower Sac, Fall and McCloud while i was there. Weather was too nice. Best of luck to you. I should come help you with your sheetrock. I’ve been in the business for 30 years!!
I’ve just fished the Sac but I know a lot of secret places that no one bothers with.
Well sure, come on up and help with the sheetrock…after we fly fish for a few days. I keep wanting to try the lake for smallies too…not sure if they’re down this time of year but if the lake hasn’t turned over, maybe not. There should be some 9 pounders in there by now.
I mean it, come up Rich. How long does it take to drive here from there?
10 hour drive. I wish i could come back right now. I have some pressing stuff at work and then a trip to AZ in two weeks or i would be there.
Keep me posted if you can, i love fish reports!
Ok, that’s understandable…I might be tempted myself but a 10 hour drive isn’t a fun thing for me anymore.
Din’t fly fish today…stuck with yard work, sheetrock learning experience and helped the HS student next door with the A/C on his Ranger mini truck. Might should go to the lake tomorrow or maybe check a closer to home part of the river…either that or the north fork Sac. I’ve heard things.
Well, it’s that time of year again…i’ll head south in a day or two and will spend a week or so around Dunsmuir/Mt. Shasta CA. This time i plan on visiting the McCloud River too, not just the Upper Sac…though I will fish the Upper Sac and this time i’m prepared to make the more serious hike to get to the 25+ inchers.
I’ll be roughing it in the house i’m working on and living like a refuge whilei continue sheetrock work (ATTN: crook33, heh, heh), painting outside and as always working on the yard. Hopefully there will be a few quarts or so of blackberries left to put on my cereal and to return home with. The pears should be good and ripe by now too.
Anyone wants to come up, down or sideways to spend a day or so, shootme a pm and we’ll make a plan. October Caddis should be awesome this year.
Hey MM,
I spent the weekend hanging taping and texturing a new room in my house!
I’ll be coming up on Oct. 17th and “probably” fishing the Upper Sac that afternoon. Monday Tuesday and Wednesday will be guided trips to the Lower Sac., McCloud and Fall River. Don’t know about Thursday and Friday yet. Would love to hook up with you and see that water with the 25" fish.
Let me know if you think that might be arranged with your schedule.
What a coincidence that you should happen to be ‘rocking’…heh, heh…yeah, i’m going to be learning about applying tape and then the ‘lite’ mud over that, then sanding and so on.
Sounds good for the 17th of Oct and if i get jury duty out of the way by then i don’t see a reason why i can’t come back down just this minute. Will certainly
try !
