Up-eye hooks

I did a search and couldn’t find any threads on up-eye curved scud hooks. I was thinking of buying some of them to tie some caddis, scuds, etc. on them. Anyone have an opinion on them? It seems as though there would be more room for hook penetration.

There is more room, but there is a downside, too. If you use any of the common knots to attach the fly to your tippet, hook set tends to pull the front of the fly downward, which also pivots the point away from fish flesh. If you use a knot that goes through the eye, and attaches to the hook shank- like a turle- then the problem is gone. Personally, I like the Mustad C49S hooks, as they have a scud-ish curve, but a straight eye.

Chuck is right, in my experience, on smaller hooks, upturned eyes cost ya’ fish. If they worked as well, you’d see more people tying with them…

you’d see more people tying with them and you would be able to obtain them easier  why not just go with the tiemco 206bl or the tiemco 2488

Thanks, All! I went with the Daiichi 1120 Heavy Wire Scud Hook. I needed something stronger. I noticed with bigger fish and faster water my hooks were bending. I tied some flies on fine wire hooks and they aren’t holding up for bigger fish.

You should also try the Signature CO68 as this is a 2X stong curved scud hook with a nice offset.

Dr. Fish: I apologize I wasn’t stumping for any hook brand. I just wanted the posters to know what I decided on buying. Are there any updated hook comparison charts with signature type hooks?
