Ugly Flies/

What happens to someone who joins a swap and sends ugly flies? Are they forever banned from FAOL? Never again allowed in a swap? Forty lashes with a 14 weight sinking line?
I’ve kinda got the urge. I’m thinking maybe a deadline would get me off my duff again.
Lots of excuses not to tie…need different hooks, another shade of chenille/yarn,no olive elephant fur and the list goes on.
Does anybody have a problem loading their fly boxes for impending fishing days when the weather is too crappy to even imagine warm weather?(fair weather fly fisher?)

no worries mate.
we’ve all been there.
don’t be timid. swaps help exponentially in improving yer ties.

jump right in.

rodger,

For no specific reason other than I always have, 99.9% of the flies I use are my own. I do not use flies obtained through swaps so I do not count on them to fill my boxes.

This weather has kept the ‘shack nasties’ somewhat away. However, I too have to get my a** in gear and start tying. You just have to realize that the season will quickly creep up on you and you need to get your boxes full. That realization hasn’t quite hit me yet either. I hope it does when the next cold spell hits so I can my fingers working again.

I have a problem sitting down and tying a couple dozen of the same pattern, and joining a swap would help that - also, if you notice your flies improving as you go, you could just tie a few more and keep the earlier ones for yourself. That has been my pattern, that by about the sixth fly, they have improved dramatically.

Join up! I host quite a few, and you will see the whole spectrum on most swaps. Work from real artists to the weekend hack (that is where I fall, I’m afraid  ). But join in. It will make you a better tyer, and you will get a lot of cool ideas for new patterns/materials/techniques.

Never be afraid to join a swap because of your level of experience. Pick a swap that you know you would enjoy doing a pattern for, and pick out a fly you would feel comfortable tying. I usually tie twice as many flies as I need for the swap, then pick out the best ones to send in. When you tie enough of a pattern, you find that each one gets easier and better looking.
Enjoy.

rodgerole,

If ugly flies got people banned from swap I’d have been banned a long time ago. Take the plunge, get in on a swap that interests you. You’ll get to see all types of flies in the process. I got two in a swap last year that I will not fish with because they are so nice. There’s some awesome tyers on FAOL who are ready to share their knowledge and advice. I joined alot of swaps last year (about 16) and hosted 2; I’ve cut way so I can have time to tie for myself ( which I enjoy immensely ). My tying has improved and I catch fish with what I tie. That, in itself, is rewarding. I’ve also met some really nice guys through the swaps. Let me encourage you to join … you’ll be glad you did.

I only tie ugly flies. Swaps are great ways to fidn new patterns and techniques.

How many of us have found out that the flies that have cauaght fish before work better thanflies that have not caught a fish?
