it’s rather plain, is functional but the paint is wrong. the paint can cap shows flat white, turns out to be semi gloss so i’ll have to paint it one more time before it can be used. maybe lowes will give me a new can of paint to correct the mistake.
Very nice work and a great design, but I am curious why you painted the entire bench white? I could see maybe painting the flat surface a light color to make it easier to find hooks, beads etc. but you went to a lot of extra work to paint the entire desk???
Hey Wes,
Nice build… but I hope you got some cash leftover to fill up all those empty holes with some new gadgets and a vise.
I like the white. One of these days I’m gonna paint my fly tying board…(but I keep saying that, is there Prosaic for prognostication?).
the angled back plate was in the plans. i built for my desk dimension and even modified my desk a bit to make room. don’t worry it’s a cheap walmart computer desk
thanks everybody. this is a fun project.
the entire thing is painted cause the wood is crappy. the tabletop is mdf that was left over from the shop benches, the tool holder of a piece of 2x12 left over from fixing the headboard for our new bed, the side rails are ripped from 2x2 left over from building shelves, the vise pedestal is ripped from scrap 2x4 left over from shop benches. all edges have been through the router with a 9/32" roman ogee or a 1/4" round over. all parts are screwed and glued. or is that glued and screwed? almost all the holes are filled. had to add more pegs for the spooled stuff. made with on hand material except for the doweling. the last thing is a head cement jar/applicator and i can’t find my bodkin.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the white paint to me. As a woodworker, I love the look of a nice grain with lots of character. Therefor, I avoid painting wood that will show. That being said, MDF and 2x4s are not know for their beauty. Very nice job on the bench and from the looks of the last photo, it looks like you’ve already put it to good use.
When the weather is nice, you should take that fly tying bench outdoors and dress some patterns in the daylight… I have my own bench that I won on FAOL, that I do just that. My fly tying/rod building room is for the winter months in Minnesota.
thanks tf.
i’ve removed the vise pedestal. for tying at a desk it’s too tall. raised hands to very near shoulder level. i’m used to mid chest level. i think it’d work for tying on the lap or sitting in an easy chair. someday i’d like build one from oak or…
