Tullis Wiggler variations

Now that the the original Tullis Wiggler has caught fish on two successive trips, it was time to start playing with variations.

All the bodies are cut on my laser cutter/engraver, for consistency and uniformity - that it takes less than 15 minutes to cut a dozen perfect bodies with a center mark for the hook doesn’t hurt either.

Dark grey body, gold sides and body.

Classic Pink & White.

…and a “frog”

I like them. Will try to downsize for panfish.

The bodies on these are 1/2" x 2" long for a 4/0 Partridge Attitude Extra - description as follows:

“Wide gape, micro-barbed predator hook capable of holding feisty species on still waters, rivers, estuaries and open water. Ideal for hair spinning, minnow and hairwing patterns.”

I’m going to try to downsize for a smaller hook, but am thinking on the proportions, and where to burn the center hole for the hook.

…I’m also going to up-size for musky and pike at some point, but have to think about what hook to use.

I added the notch and narrow section at the back to make it easier to tie.

I find it easy to bevel the front edge on a sanding disk per a recommendation from Larry Tuliis.

You say frog, but I 'm thinking crippled bluegill. Maybe make the body yellow.

Crippled bluegill works.

Oddly enough, yellow wasn’t one of the colors in the pack of 6mm foam I got.

The “frog” is white foam, with yellow, then green paint markers.

Weirdness in play…

Smallies and one very nice 27" pike were eating these flies on a local river yesterday - the frog and chartreuse ones in particular…

But the red/gold, brown gold, and pink/white versions didn’t wiggle on the strip.

I thought it might be weight, but that’s not it.

Is the difference in the tails? I can’t see it on the chartreuse but the tail on the frog might create more drag/resistance than the others.

The frog and the chartreuse fly worked great. The kraft fur tail on the chartreuse version is virtually identical to the pink/white and red/gold…all that’s different is the color.

I checked weight this afternoon. The chartreuse fly is the lightest, the frog is the heaviest by almost 30 grains.

What do you contribute the weight differences to?

Weight difference is different materials.

All but the frog were between 29 and 32 grains, with the red one that has three rubber legs on each side being the heaviest.

The frog is 52 grains, and there’s all most of silicone jig skirt at the back.

Just another guess, but is the angle of the beveled edge to the direction of the hook eye the same?

It sure looks like it to me.

The brown/gold one may have a bit too thick of a front lip, but they look the same to my eye.

Do you have a video or step by step for the Tullis Wiggler?

I do - It’s the one I used to tie my first one - but I can’t see see a way to attach a PDF.
