tube fly vise

Where’s the picture man?

Tube Flies have a place in fly fishing, was just reading a current article about Tube Flies in “The Canadian Flyfisher” magazine.

I use aka: Q-Tips, various manufacturers have different diameter plastic stems. I insert the plastic stem inside a metal tubes that I bought at the local hardware store (they are called musical tubes, and are brass or copper, and they are hollow). The metal tubes are available in various diam enters.

I insert the plastic stem inside the metal tube, the stem is longer then the metal tube, think of the metal tube as weighting the fly, and the plastic stem extends out of the rear of the metal tube for what ever length you want the fly body to be. I melt the front of the plastic stem to round the edges, using a butane lighter. I super glue the plastic stem, to hold it securely inside the metal tube.

Bicycle spokes come in various diameters, so go to a bike shop, explain what you need and why, they will sell you one spoke and nut, in whatever diameter spoke you need. Don’t worry you most likely are not the first to visit them with you request.

Some tuber tyer’s do the fly pattern in component parts for the fly pattern. Dressed hook for the Tail. stem, tube for the Abdomen, for the Thorax they have a small metal tube that is inserted inside a larger metal tube. The Thorax is inserted inside the Abdomen portion.

This way the fly angler can just carry 3 fly boxes, one for the Tail, one for the Abdomen, and the last for the Thorax. They can mix and match for whatever they think will attract the fish.

Warning: This is another of the slippery slopes that will lead you to falling down the rabbit hole. Fly Fishing has so many of them… ~Parnelli

OOppp’s…I edited that post…

and I do think the spoke is the neatest way to do it…ala Bill…

OK, I broke down and got a couple of spokes to try tube fly tying. Now my daughter is complaining there’s a wobble on the front wheel of her ten-speed.

okay guys i gues this is what i am going to hae to try is the spoke thing.

thanks,
Deon

Here’s another reason to tie tube flies.

I was called upon to take some boys fishing at the last minute. They were opposed to the idea of fly fishing.

So, I took some tube flies and some cone head weights and attached it to their spin cast rods.

You know, they outfished me that day!

So, versatility is another reason for those serious hardware chuckers.
