True Gratification!

Friends,

I received a modest fly tying kit for Christmas and tied a few wooly buggers. My first experience at tying and it was completely gratifying. Now, I am confident that some trout would giggle if they saw my first fly, however, I made such significant progress on the 10th one I tied, that I am prepared to get more material to try some others. I will try to post some pics to show you before and afters (need directions on posting pics).

Just wait till you get to the creek and hook up on one of your flies. I after many years 20+ got back into tying flies and tied up a few a couple of months ago. I headed down to the creek and when I caught my first fish I was like a kid in a candy store. I could not have beeen more excited. I am pretty sure the fish are not quite as picky as we are about how the flies “look”.

Bill,

Thanks for the encouragement. I can’t wait to hook one on MY fly. Looking forward to it.

PS I am in Westmoreland county - you?

Thanks JC. Good suggestions.

paflyfisher, welcome to a very gratifying and addicting hobby. Like JC says, be sure to hang on to some of those early flies. I have a separate box of flies that has my first nymph, dry fly, and streamer that caught fish as well as a few other special bugs.

Have fun!

PAFF,

I notice you’re in the Pittsburgh area, me too. If you’re interested in getting together with others to tie flies, the local TU chapter is starting a beginners class next month. Several of the area fly shops are as well. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll get you come more info.

Tying is a great obsession, er, I mean hobby! As you get into it, be sure to tell people that you tie your own on account of all the money you’re saving :wink:

paflyfisher;
It sounds like you are realy enjoying tying.
When I took my first lessons 2 years ago I made the choice of “Tyer’s Grade” or #3’s when buying capes. They are of nice quality and great for bigger fly’s #12’s and up and a few smaller one. I would suggest at least #2 grade or up. And, maybe just 1/2 capes.
Probably the most expensive tool, other than the vice will be the sissors. To make them last cut wire as far back from the tips as possible.
Good Luck and have fun!!
P.S. I don’t see any of the PA people signed up for the FAOL Fish-In!!??
