Triming a WF Line

I have read several of the posts discussing the impact of triming several feet off a Wulff TT line. If I undersatnd the physics – you are shortening the taper and modifying the weight of the line. Does this work as well on a more typical WF (Orvis Hy-coat, etc). Is this then like the Cortland Rocket Taper. Thanks again. Dave

Cutting several feet off of a WF flyline will drop the line at least 1 line weight, like from a 5wt to a 4wt, and will also turn the line into more of a shooting head taper with a very short head, the head will turn over larger flies better but you will sacrifice your presentation.

It will INCREASE your line weight if the tip section you are cutting off is a smaller diameter than the same lenth of line behind the WF portion. Try cutting it off about a foot at a time and then casting until it feels right. It will turn over bigger, heavier flies.

If your looking for more distance/speed…or better ability to punch out bigger flies…Why not go to a bass bug type taper or Mastery Headstart…they are almost the same…the headstart is more of a pike taper but available in much lighter line weights…Just some thoughts…

“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best
