Fished the Elk River today from 12noon to 4pm and caught 8 rainbow and 1 brown. Used my “pimped” Medalist 1494 on my 4 weight and had a ball! All fish were a plump 13" except for one and had to take a picture of it before releasing:
Warren should have added that it was 60 degrees and cloudy. Got any of that in the Island Nation of Ohio, Joe!?
Nice fish, and sounds like a great day.

Has your catch rate gone up since you got the Medalist or do I need to get some fishing lessons from you?
Jeez, a 9 fish day in January!! I need to move!
The reel looks great on that rod!
Nice fish Warren:
Crash 13 and I had a great time fishing for skip jack, yesterday. Got into them pretty good a couple of times. Caught a few small bass. Gary caught some stripe rs and yellow bass.
That’s a nice looking reel. Can’t wait to get mine pimped.
Bamboozle: Don’t want to make you feel worse, but I had an 8-fish day on December 20 on a stream in Central, PA. It was cold, but some food and drink and a warm grill made it a fun time. A few of my friends get together every year for a Christmas fishing trip cookout. I’ll have to post some photos of the day.
Nice fish, and awesome reel.
Going to have to do that to one of mine.
Nick,
Come on down and we will see if we can put you on some of our fish. Even Jack will help.
Ron,
Skipjack sure are a lot of fun to catch on a fly rod! I forgot to mention that besides the trout, I did catch one Kentucky bass that was maybe 13" and just as fat as the trout. Really was a great day.
Really wanted to take a better picture of the reel with the fish, but, also wanted to get the trout back in the river as soon as possible.
I assume you caught that trout in New Zealand, right? 'Cause it’s upside down!

Chuck…not sure what yer seein’…but…

Hey Moose,
What model Pflueger is that reel? I have a hard time finding Pfluegers with the round line guard that are set up for left hand wind.
Lonnie
Lonnie,
I think your question is directed at me since the picture is the one I sent in. The reel is a vintage Medalist 1494 that I purchased from E-Bay. They were set up for right hand retrieve but can be converted to left hand wind. The factory drag plate has 8 indents on one side and only 4 on the other side and when you flip it over to convert from right hand retrieve to left hand the retrieve is not as smooth as it was due to the side with only 4 indents now coming into play. They do not come from the factory with the round line guard. One-Pfoot makes all the parts to convert the 1494 to a really smooth reel. They make a drag plate that has 8 indents on both sides so it is just as smooth right hand retrieve or left hand retrieve. They also can install the round line guard. I sent them the reel and had it reworked with their new parts and accesories or “pimped”. I really like the work done and the reel.
I noticed on E-Bay that there is another vintage Pflueger reel up for sale that came with the round line guard from the factory and it is up to $80 the last time I looked! Not sure what model it was that came out with the round line guard.
Hi Warren,
Ya, I see I directed my inquiry to the wrong person…sorry 'bout that. Anyway, I’m familiar with one pfoot but did not know they could add the round line guard. I’ll have to look at their website more carefully. It’s a great looking reel. I’m a big fan of vintage American made reels and I love to see folks still using them. I am just spooling up a Pflueger Progress from my generation (the 1960’s) that has never been fished and it will go on my 4wt bamboo. Grampa’s old Sal-Trout is going on my 5wt bamboo.
