Hi cholcomb13,
Very cool effect with the camera! If you figure out why that happened let us know. And, very nice fly. I think there’s lots of room for experimentation with spiders using modern materials. Nice work.

Jeff,
That Pritt’s fly the Blue Partridge gave me the urge to dress a spider,
here is a variant the Blue Starling, using grey 'possum.

The next one I think I’ll chop up the 'possum a bit shorter.
Hi Donald,
Very nice! The blue head is more in keeping with Pritt’s patterns (where most of his have heads and bodies of the same colour) than the black head I tied on the blue body (I use floss for the bodies which makes the head too bulky. I have to pick up some blue tying thread). I really like the colour combination you’ve produced and suspect that pattern will produce very nicely. The blue is more subdued than the bright aqua blue or dark royal blue that I’ve used in the past and the overall effect is much more close to what is shown in Pritt’s colour plate (at least, in the version I have of them in S.Neme’s book). I think I might have some stretch floss that is close and I should give that a try as that would give me a nice range of blue spiders. And, you’ve reminded me that I will have to keep an eye out for a new starling cape.
Jeff,
It is UniThread 6/0 Light Blue. I was originally looking for a brighter blue and this was all I could find.
I have various blue flosses, but I wanted a thread, so this was it.
It is probably the better choice now that I can see it. Just goes to show, often subdued is better.
I’ll have to see if I can get some of that V-Rib.
Hi Donald,
Thanks for the tip on the colour. I use Uni thread a lot, so I’ll keep an eye out for the light blue. I really like the shape of the body, and I think the long hairs will add to the overall effectiveness (trap more air bubbles maybe?).
You are probably right about the long hairs Jeff, when tying, or should I say dressing, a lot, which I am, you can get a bit obsessed about the appearance and forget the real reason for the flies in the first place.
The scruffiest flies are often the ones that fool the most trout.
hmm i have never seen uni thread in blue!
anybody know where to get some??

I am lovin this thread. Originally about a Partridge and Yellow, it is now a very good thread on wet fly patterns.
