The Kettle Drake was originally tied to fish over the Brown Drake hatch of Kettle Creek Pennsylvania. It has since proven itself on most of the North-Central waters and several southern spring creeks of Pennsylvania where the Brown Drake hatch is prevalent.
The hook is the profile that I want along with the straight eye. The beadhead hook is 2X long but it’s closer to standard wire, just with a larger gape and a bend to accommodate the beads. They have the nearly identical the hook in “heavy Nymph” style as well, which would be too heavy. This pattern hangs almost completely below the film…so it works. A dry fly hook with the same profile would be excellent as well, agreed. I just don’t stock them, so this hook has been pulling double-duty for me pretty effectively.
Makes sense; wasn’t familiar with the hook and assumed it was a heavier wire (kinda like Kaufmann’s original Stimulator tied on Tiemco 200s - even heavily hackled, that’s a lot of hook to float).
