The Great Backyard Bird Count

Just wanted to give you all a heads up. This weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count. If you are out on the water or stuck at home take a few minutes and count of the birds you see and submit it. Have done this the past couple of years both personaly and with my 5th graders. They like it too!

I did it last year and had a great time. Going to be in the California Desert this weekend so I hope to see some cool birds.

Scott

Thought a few people here might be counting.

Nice picture DG! I would like to add that one to my list for the count. Only have seen one once at my place. Get the smaller brown headed type every now and then though.

Here’s a list of birds I have seen in our back yard. This list is absolutely incomplete. It’s a work in progress, and it’s only 5 years old.
House Finch
Cedar Waxwing
American Goldfinch
Robin
California Valley Quail
Starling
Mourning Dove
Magpie
Ringneck Pheasant
Ravens
Various Humming Birds
Various Sparrows
Various Chickadees
Great Horned Owl
Red Tail Hawk
Seagulls
Greater Canada Goose
Bald Eagle
Killdeer
Seagulls

I will be counting again this year. Just yesterday I had over 20 Cedar Waxwings in my yard. I hope the berries hold out until this week. You can use that same data for eBird as well.

I have never partcipated before, I will try to remember, if I tell my wife she will probably remind me. It is supposed to be too cold for a southern boy to go float tubing.

We had a white breasted nuthatch take up residence with you last year, haven’t seen him lately though. We have the brown one also. I think some Cardinals and Robins are starting to nest. Of course, late last week there were redbuds blooming in some areas and iris’ coming up I am told. I notice yesterday at 6 p.m. local time, it was still light out. Love it.

Thanks for the sight! We will be doing this also as we are bird watchers and feeders also and have several raptors at the ranch. Have done raptor surveys for the BLM before, this will be fun.

I will be counting too. I love watching my fine feathered friends. Check out this pic my wife took a couple years ago.

We have had a big group of maybe 50 cedar waxwings at school the past couple of days. Hope they hold out so my students can count them. Also, I have been seeing a red shouldered hawk on my way home from school. Hope to get him/her in the count too. I think a pair of them nested down the road last year.

Glad to see that so many of you are going to participate!
