How does everyone like their TFO fly rod? I have a 8wt TiCr. It’s a little on the stiff side. Heavier than a 8wt St. Croix. Makes casting distance easy though.
Love my TFOs. I have a bunch of them.
I’m sure there are rods out there I would like better, but it’s sort of like healthcare. Who cares how good it is if you can’t afford it!
I fish a 9’ 4 weight Professional. It actually makes my casting look good. Tightest loops I’ve ever thrown. Now I want the 7 1/2’ 5 weight. Then the 9’ 6 weight. Then…
I have a couple of TFO’s. One is a “pre-Lefty Kreh”, 2pc 3wt - nice little rod. The other is a 4pc 3wt. Can’t recall the later ones series at the moment. Doesn’t matter. Sure they weigh in a tad more than mid to higher end rods, but you get a lot of bang for your buck. Good back-ups if you don’t want the better rod to get beat up.
I have mostly TFO rods.
7.5’ 3wt series one
9’ 4wt TiCr
9’ 6wt TiCr
8’9" 4wt Finesse
My 4wt TiCr is my go-to rod for most endeavors. It simply does everything well and casts like a dream.
I didn’t like the 6wt until last weekend when I fished it for Smallies on the James. It really came into it’s own then, and I now like it a lot.
The Finessee is my smaller water trout rod. It’s in a class of its own with dries and nymphs. Doesn’t throw a streamer too well though.
The 3wt is fine. It does its job and was cheap. I recently picked up a St Croix Avid 7’ 3wt that I actually like better, but for the money the TFO 3wt is hard to beat.
I buy TFO because they’re affordable, their warranty and customer service is unmatched, and they fish and cast very well. That said, they’re no Winston BIIx! If I could afford them, I’d have them, but I’m perfectly happy with my TFOs.
Regards,
Jeff
I have the 8’6" 3 weight TFO Pro and the 6 weight TICR. The TICR is a little heavy and stiff and can wear you out cast all day but it’s a tuff rod and worth the money. I think for the $200+ on the TICR models though that I’d look at the Redington RS3. Great rod for the cash. Stunning looks, performance and great customer service and warranty. Hey, Sage owns em and they are awesome rods. I like them better than the TFO’s. Hard to beat the Pro series TFO though for $140 bucks…
My TFO (ticrx 8wt) Is a ok rod. it is super fast not the best action for me but i mostly use it for chuck and duck fishing. the cork handle is kinda cheap there is alot of filler in it But I havent found a rod under 300 with great cork. The Jim Teeny rod is more my style, I wish i would have bought that rod instead.
I do own a RS3 in 7wt and I absolutly love this rod it is great a little slower action, but still fast (cast like a dream)
I have T&T Horizon 9? 6# Love that rod
I think a broken TFO rod is a good TFO rod. Terrible rods where do they come from?
In steed of buying lots of TFO rods and newer be satisfied I think you should buy one good USA rod and be happy
I absolutely love my TFO Professional 9’ 5wt. For the money I spent on it, it was a great investment as it has really improved my casting.
In response to Gudmgu all I can say is that some of us just can’t afford to pay the prices T&T charges. For the price of a T&T Horizon II rod I could buy several TFO rods.
Just my .02
Brian
I guess Gudmgu has to make comments like that to justify spending that much on a rod. In fact if I spent that much on a rod I would love it too…heck for the kind of money it better love me back too.
I am in the market for a new rod is TFO is my leading choice…though in recent posts JC has made some convincing arguments in favor of an SA rod. Thanks everyone for posting the comments about TFO.
Get a Horizon 1 on discount price. Not the newest model but much better than any TFO you can come up with.
Ore maybe Sage XP. A fine rod not made any more but much better than any TFO. One exelent rod is much better than few bad ones
Then you don?t have to buy bunce of rods like SilverMallard
I don’t think that statements like, "I hate 'Brand X are very fair. Oddly, they are often made by those who actually own one, but can not directly state what, in their opinion, is wrong with the whole brand. Especially since most everyone else disagrees with them. I have some brands that for my choice suit my requirements better than others. To say though, that any one brand is better than any other is purely subjective. Each case needs to be evaluated on it’s own merits.
I have a TiCr 6wt which I think is nice, though I prefer my older Sage RPL+ (which also cost twice as much). I am familiar with many others models.
I think that TFO rods represent pretty good fly rod values. The TiCr, TiCrX, and Bluewater models I think are particularly notable because these rods are designed with powerful butt sections that make them excellent fish fighting tools - for the most part you need to go to rods costing more than twice as much for similar capability.
For the most part, I think they perform at least as well as, and often better than similarly priced rods. Of course this is all very subjective.
I have several upper end rods that I bought cause I like the way the action works with me and all USA made.
I bought a TFO Pro 10’5wt. at the first of the season after checking out the St. Croix. The price was not a factor in this although very nice, but “I” preferred the action of the TFO. Not sure I care for the full welt handle yet, but, it’s working for me.
Fly Goddess,
Didnt you tell me once that the “I” is the most important part of selecting a rod?
I think that was around the time you stressed I should go to my local shop and “test” the feel of the rod before buying…
Mac
Glad to see you found FAOL ![]()
I still believe that.

I know you do… that is why I mentioned it… now if I can only win that sage rod here… hmmmmmm then the reel… then the line and leader and backing… what a Christmas that would be…
i have 2 TFO pro models in a 3 and 5 wt. i like them a lot. not as nice as my scott for dryfly fishing but does very well as an all around rod. i’s recommend someone trying these rods. again not every rod will appeal to every person. if it feels good, buy it. only you know for sure.
TFO makes good, basic rods. They aren’t my favorite rods to cast even though I can certainly get a lot of line out with them, but I can always count on them do what I need them to do when fishing and mine has survived bumps and knocks that certainly would’ve fractured a more expensive, high modulus graphite rod.
Note: When I say they aren’t my favorite rod to cast I mean there are rods that feel better to cast, not that the rod has performance issues.
