I live in Texas and the state is recently stocking ponds/lakes around the state with rainbows. What is the best retrieve technique and which flies and hook size would be best to use in fly casting to get a trout in these environments at this time? Would it be best to cast straight out into the pond or closer to shore?
Wecome aboard Willard,
I fished them a few times last year and had best success with an Olive Bead Head Woolly
Bugger. Something around a size 10 or 12. I just casted towards the middle an used short strips in. I did fairly well but I do think these are easy to catch fish.
They will be stocking next week near me and I’ll give it another try for sure.

The trick is to find where the fish are holding and present to them in that spot. So the task will be to cast to different spots in different ways until you find what they like (for that day)
I am heading out for some rainbows soon myself!
