Terry Hellekson 1938 - 2011

Forgive me I’m not very good at this sort of thing.
I found out just a couple of days ago that a long time member of this board left us this past year.
Terry Hellekson left us on August 14, 2011. He wasn’t a frequent poster here, although some years back I’d see that he was signed in here some mornings, no doubt reading through the days threads as you are doing now.

Many here would know Terry through his excellent books on fly tying and if you go through your older fly tying material supplies you may find some of his products, sold under the " Fly Fishing Specialties " label. I first met Terry at his store in Roseville, California back when I was very new to fly fishing business. The shop we were involved with at that time was a tiny shoe string start up and Terry opened us up as a dealer. That opened a lot of other doors for us.
Terry was a wealth of information, not only as a walking historian of fly tying and material preparation, but to us as small business people.
Terry’s son Stan eventually took over the operation with great success.
To Stan and the entire Hellekson family, Peggy and I extend our deepest condolences.

Thank you Terry,
Dave Ecklund

I have one freshwater pattern book-Popular Fly Patterns. Been using it for 29 years now. Between that book and the internet I’ve done pretty good. When I first got it I thought that I’d be the best fly tier if I could tie every pattern in the book. Started in October; on and off as the mood takes me. I’m on page 8.

I got in touch with him via email maybe two years ago and told him about how I used his book.
Used my military email. He thanked me for my service and offered to send a copy of the new version of it.
I respectfully declined but though that it was the coolest thing since watching Ray Bradbuy sign my copy of Farenheit 451 in LA.

Dave, please pass on our prayers to the family from Wyoming. Thank you.
