Swift River MASS

Water has slowed down a little, though it is still coming over the spillway. Walking up from Rt. 9 to the “Y” pool I saw fewer fish than normal. I wonder if the extra flow for the last few months has pushed them down river. Got to the “Y” pool and there were plenty of fish there. They were rising to small midges. Had some success with a Griffiths Gnat, size 24. There were two other fishermen there when I left at 8:00 and I saw three more setting up. I suggest getting there early.

Returned to the Swift last night. Fishing was good at the Y pool. Lots of trout holding and feeding on the midges.
5:30 ~ 6:00 fish were down. Caught using a #22 copper john.
6:00 ~ 6:30 Fish started to fin and eat the emergers. Caught fish with a #24 midge emerger pattern, mostly dark in color. First cast with my only emerger caught a fish and the fish destroyed the fly. It was difficult to do much without one until they started rising.
6:30 ~ 7:00 The #24 Griffiths Gnat was the ticket.

All in all 5 fish of decent size.

My only regret is that I did not give more attention to the newby couple from NY that was there. I told them what to use and how to rig up, but I did not give them a fly or any instruction. Having been skunked there myself about a thousand times its nice to help someone else not get skunked.

Hit the “Y” for a few hours today (8-06-06). There were tons more fish there than a couple weeks ago when I went. In any case, they were biting on #22 nymphs that a friend of mine tied (I know, not much help…looked something like a green caddis pupa) and then took two on #20 caddis flies. One was a real bruiser…jumping fully out of the water and everything. The other people that were catching were all using nymphs as well.

Caught them all between 12:00 and 3:30 and they were all rainbows. It was odd to see the rainbows jumping and rising at midday, but I’ll take it anyday!

I spent a good portion of the morning looking for the top of my rod which somehow popped off when I caught a tree and snapped my tippet…but after 2 hours it was found!

So despite the cleaning of the pipes on the dam, the water has returned somewhat to normal…still a little cloudy from all the silt and the Y pool itself has minor layer of silt as well, but the fish are visible. Apparently earlier in the week the river looked like watered down milk.

In any case, I was at the Y from 6:15-11:30 and managed to catch a rainbow, two brookies and a small brown. They weren’t really hitting anything in particular…it was one of those days where you just happened to catch one on something…I caught the rainbow on a Griffith’s Gnat, both brookies on Caddis Flies and the brown on a bead-head Prince Nymph.

With the weather as threatening as it was, there were only two of us at the Y for about 2 hours or so and I counted only 6 on the whole river on my way out.
