Hi
I want to get one rod that can be used for steelhead and bass here in Michigan as well as saltwater in Rhode Island. I don’t do that much fishing for any of these species so I am trying to avoid investing in multiple rods. I cast a Sage Xi2 8wt at the MI fly show a couple of months ago and was impressed how it cast a 9wt line.
I know the guide I have fished with in Narragansett Bay reccomends a 9wt and the guide I have fished with here in MI for steelhead suggests an 8wt.
TFO TiCrX 9’ 8wt w/fighting butt and a matching TFO saltwater reel w/2-3 extra spools. Put a good general purpose floating line (WF) on one of them, a good saltwater line with a heavy head on another, and a good sink-tip for freshwater on another. Then you’re set for all of the above. Add a good TFO aluminum tube and a neoprene reel case and you’re good to go!
I have seven rods that I use in the salt
This $25 stick has been my go-to rod so far this season http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=261610
I fish it with a 9wt line and I’m thinking about going to a 10
It might not be the multi-use rod that you had in mind, but at this price you can get two 8)
Don’t be afraid to down size for the Rhody salt. Never fished for steel head so I can’t help you there. My usual salt and freshwater bass rod is a 6 wt and I don’t like using anything heavier than an 8 wt anymore. Go with the 8 wt rod and put a 7/8/9/10/11 or even 12 wt line on it. I like a 13 on my 8 wt.
Line weight casts the flies and angler skill fishes and lands the fish.
You might take a serious look at something like a “Switch Rod”.
They are usually 10.5 feet in length, and can be used for spey type applications. I was casting some yesterday. I understand that they are pretty popular out west (BC) and are starting to make an appearance east of the Rockies now.
These are the ones I was trying out at a clinic yesterday. This gives a good description of what the numbers indicate…as the rating system is a little different than a regular fly rod. You can cast these rods either one or two handed.
