Interesting, wouldnt the feathers be so dry as to be useless as fly tying materials?
Eric
Darn shame!
I woundnt think of using any feathers from this collection–you cant even use feathers from a robin. BILL:tieone:
Just as there are those people who keep stolen art in there collection to look at even with out being able to show it to others I’m sure there are those who tie and collect high end flies who would jump at the chance to use the original materials to tie some patterns and wouldn’t worry about it being legal or not.
Eric
This is a very sad situation and a severe loss to the scientific community. Unfortunately, fly tyers are very likely responsible either directly or indirectly. I recall two or three other museum break-ins in which bird plumage was specifically targeted. It is definitely a damn shame. 8T
Anyone who rips off a museum is a POS. For material or not this is sad.
I think i actually heard about the result of this. turns out it was Edwin Rist (brother anton rist) who are two prodigies of the classic salmon fly tying world. Ridiculous what some people will do over these hobbies…
Just read about this in Fly Tyer magazine. The article said that Mr. Rist had not yet been sentenced. Anyone have an update?
Allan
Seems to me tar and feathers would fit him quite nicely…
Steve,
Excellent!!!
Here’s the update link:

A 12-month suspended prison sentence. That is not justice…he needed to spend at least a year in prison for this crime. IMHO
Daddy worked a blinder on this one.
sentences in the UK are generally far less severe than for a smiler crime here in the USA, its been a long time since I looked but I don’t think there recidivism rate is much different than ours.
Eric
Yeah, I don’t think there’s much of a recidivism rate for people who steal stuffed birds out of museums. However, this kid stole a national treasure that, from the accounts I read, is irreplaceable. He was either very lucky with the sentence or something else is at play.
As for the people who bought the stuffed birds or skins he was able to sell, was it really necessary?
Allan
I also read that this guy is a very accomplished tier. I think he knew what he was doing. Just my .02cents worth
It looks to be just over 44% for the United States and over 70% for the United Kingdom!

However that is just one report.
What a joke of a sentence, that kid didn’t learn a thing except how to get over the system
