stone fly pattern at tying symposium

did anyone else attend the international fly tying symposium last weekend in summerset new jersey?
there was a Tyer there, along the back row who had nothing but incredible stone fly patterns and i cant remember his name… his exact words were, “i will put my stonefly pattern up against anyone, and win ever time. i tie these for the fish, not for you, that’s why people pay me 500 for a set.” although i found that statement a little egotistical, they were exceptional looking patterns.

i know this description is extremely vague, but does anyone know who i an talking about? i would like to check out his work a bit further.
im sure if i heard his name bells and whistles will go off and ill remember.

thanks,
spoof

ps, what did u guys think of the symposium? assuming u went.

spoof,

I wasn’t able to attend but here’s the advertised list of the tyers from the show.
You wrote that, “im sure if i heard his name bells and whistles will go off and ill remember.”

Given the build-up you described, I’d be interested in learning the identity of that tyer. Also, how many flies were there in his ‘set’?

Allan

Looking at the list of tyers, and hearing that quote, I’d guess it was Randy Buchanan. Was this the stonefly?

I would probably second Randy

Actually, I’ve had second thoughts about the information in the first post. You say he said,
“I will put my stonefly pattern up against anyone, and win ever time. i tie these for the fish, not for you, that’s why people pay me 500 for a set.”
That may be the most egocentric thing I 've heard a fly tyer/fly fisher say in a very very long time.
That may be the most egotistical thing I’ve heard a fly tyer/fly fisher say in a very very long time. He ties his flies for fish which means to be used, and therefore abused. Yet he is paid $500 per set? Just a coup[le of questions: Are there 500 in a set? How many sets has this guy sold at that price? I won’t post my 3rd question because, well because anything is possible but I’d like to know the name of who may have paid $500 for a set(?). There’s a bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY I hear is for sale.

Allan

Allan,

I’ve caught his act before; surprised there was enough room in the auditorium for all those tiers and his ego.

Scott

Royce Dam is the best fly tier I know. He won the FFF Buszek Award in 1994. He gets invited all over the world to tie. FFF states, “The Federation of Fly Fishers’ Buz Buszek Fly Tying Award is the most prestigious award in the world of fly tying.”

I’d put Royce’s stoneflies against anyone’s.

Here are photos from a plate of stoneflies I won at an auction.

Go here and look at his arctic Shrew fly, second plate on the post below.

it was randy bachanan… people that are that into themselves dont get much attention from me, so sorry allan… i will never know how man flies are in his “set”.

i cant seem to find anything else he did though, just the stone…

thanks guys, and apparently he has a heck of a reputation if u guys could guess him off what i gave u…

either way, nice pattern.

Yes Indeed! I’d put ANY of his flies: nymph, dry,(especially parachutes), spun deerhair, streamers, salmon, or any type you can name, against anyone’s.

As far as that Randy Buchanan, never met or heard of him (not that that means anything).

Allan

spoof,I know Randy.Maybe you caught him at a bad time or??Confident probably but never appeared egotistical to me.

i dont want anyone to get the wrong impression here, to me he seemed a little, “strong,” and there is nothing wrong with that. i have nothing against him, i dont know him.

to be less abrasive, confident fits… however his body language, and tone of voice seemed a bit strong.
again, nothing against the guy, i garentee he has been tying longer, and has more advanced techniques, along with far more experience then i do… and it shows in his flies. he seemed more abrasive then inviting to his table to me, thats all.

on another note, i was able to see one demonstration before heading back to PA, i saw charlie craven tie up a Parachute adams, a hopper pattern, and… something else(name eludes me at the moment) i was impressed.

Silver Creek

Terrible photo, but my collection of Royce’s flies contains his Shrew…

Great guy.

But, if my info is correct, he passed away. Don’t want to “exaggerate his demise”…

do you by any chance know what type, size, etc. his stonefly is on?
