Sport King Bamboo Rebuild

One of the guides down at a shop that sends me a LOT of repair business wanted Dad’s bamboo rod freshened up.

It’s an older Sport King M133.

This is what I started with.

I stripped everything off, cleaned up the blank, straightened as much as I could, and refinished with wipe-on polyurethane. The reel eat hardware is DL5 with a tulip wood insert. I turned a Fenwick style grip for it. The agate stripper and new guides are wrapped down with Candy Apple nylon tipped with black, no CP. I had to reset the ferrules and once they were cleaned up, they fit fine again. Not the quality of some of our builders here, but it will get fished and enjoyed.

Another winner Kevin. Almost as cool as the little ninja rod you built.

How did you retain so much color in the wraps without CP ? Was it the poly finish ?

I used Mudhole’s ProKote epoxy on it. Very clear and thin.

Beautiful job.

Nice job Kevin. I always enjoy these “before and after” photos.
I’ve never seen that female ferrule before.
Is it ok not being overwrapped?

Hope so. It wasn’t originally and it would have taken a lot of work to get the thread to climb up onto it.

Just a terrific job - I’ll bet you made someone very happy!

Thank you, Deanna.

If I can get him to call me back so he can take delivery, I guess we will find out how happy he is.

Kevin,

That is some serious “freshening up”! Very nice transformation. Question was asked about wrapping the female ferrule. My ? is this: If you had to wrap it - could you wrap starting on top the ferrule and go towards the wood? Wouldn’t it be easier to jump down than up - or wouldn’t it work very well either direction?

Best regards, Dave S.

Very Nicely Done . . . !
