I know at least one person here has posted pics of a rod with an open spiral trim over the main wraps but I have yet to find it.
Who has done this and how do you do it (if it’s not your trade secret)?

BB, I always do the open spiral wrap at the hook keeper. Threads over the back foot, wrap open under the keeper, then threads over the front foot. I like the look. I will however, openly admit, I stole it (the idea) from Joe Dough boy V.
I have done this with several different materials. This is how I do it. I lock it iin with the main wrap. Then once the main wrap is close to being finished put a loop in to pull the thread or material under the main wrap and lock it in. Now wrap the design you want and then when done put it in the loop pull under the main wrap and trim. I trim as I am pulling it under the main wrap. You can do spirals or a X or what ever. Your imagination is all you need <a href=“http://s123.photobucket.com/albums/o308/harleybob87/?action=view¤t=DSCF2291-1.jpg” target=“_blank”><img src=“http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o308/harleybob87/DSCF2291-1.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket”></a> and another example <a href=“http://s123.photobucket.com/albums/o308/harleybob87/?action=view¤t=Pictureparty281.jpg” target=“_blank”><img src=“http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o308/harleybob87/Pictureparty281.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket”></a>
Fenwick has been doing it for years but not over underwraps. I’ve seen many spinning rods and trolling rods using open wraps over metallic colored foil, but never over underwraps. I think they add a nice touch.
Is this what you mean
or this spiral inlay
I think your second photo is the classiest of the two, but the first one is the one that always comes to mind for me when someone says spiral wraps. Both are really cool additions to any wraps.
