Source for SDR 21 PVC Pipe?

Hi folks,

Does anyone have a source for affordable sdr 21 pvc? I can only find 1 1/4 in. I need 2 in for rod tubes, if I can get it.

Thanks, John

Just a question out of curiosity, why not just buy schedule 40 or white plumb pipe?

Bob, Too heavy

The last rod blanks I had shipped to me were in sdr 32.5 Nice and light. Our local homestores just stock the heavy stuff. I’ve been reusing the 32.5 to send out completed rods for Christmas presents to my dad and brother in law. Any specialty pluming stores in your area John?

You should be able to obtain the thin wall 2" PVC and end caps from a central vacuum supply house. I get mine from a local vacuum cleaner shop.

Thanks all, very good ideas

Haven’t been on this forum forever and this reply is a little late but this is what I use … 3 in. x 10 ft. Polyethylene Perforated Drainage Pipe … very light and very strong.

I’ve made rod tubes out of sch 40 and 80 (both were free scraps, but long enough for what I needed) I just bought the ends with screw-out plugs. Wal-lah! rod tubes for less than $5 each. They are heavy, but I just use them for storage at the house, not travel. Even with thinner pipe, I would still like to cover them like the nylon cover tubes you can buy, but never figured out a decent way to do so. This thread got me thinking of a post here in rodbuilding and that was on handle/grip making with foam core inside on woven graphite tubing. If one can get the woven tubing big enough to go over thin PVC, you have the start of really cool looking rod tubes. I’ve seen carbon fiber rod case for sale, just not sure if you can make them cheaper then buying them.

Thanks , you've got me thinking (usually trouble). I build carbon sleeve over foam handles regularly, so I've ordered 2in sleeve material and will use on a 2in mailing cardboard tube as permanent mandrel. Will coat inside with something to help water proof, then epoxy sleeve over and leave tube in. Could also use multiple layers of sleeve material and remove mandrel, but that would be more $ than I want to invest. Let you know how it turns out. Could be be a possible article for RodBuilder mag. Mr. Kirkman might be interested.

Thanks again, Great Idea

Was it on this post that I found these? http://stonecreekltd.com/Rod_Tube_Kits.htm

Those are pretty. But by the time you buy the PVC, the price of a new one from Cabela’s or Bass pro is only a few $ more. However, they made to fit and the fact that you CAN make one yourself does make these kits appealing. Kinda like those landing nets kits (that cost the same or sometimes more) than a cheap landing net off the shelf. Still it’s “I made this” factor I guess.

Thanks for the link herefishy.

Some upholstery supply companies ship fabrics rolled on thinwall pvc or plastic tubing in 1 1/2" or 2" diameters. At least they did when I was in that line of work. I used a lot of that stuff for rod tubes. Still have some of them around. Maybe check your local upholstery shop for leftovers. Just my .02.

Yes Bass-Bug

and you still have to find some usable tubing, and I haven’t yet

Right On, Thanks!
