Catfish! I didn’t go flyfishing and didn’t bring a camera, but I went out Thursday afternoon with a buddy. We caught 2 dozen catfish from shore between 6 and 8 PM in 105 degree heat on the flats of a local lake. Once it got dark, the bite was over. Most were 2 to 5 pounds with a couple in the 7-10 lb. range. I love daytime catfishing in the dog days of summer.
So if you are getting cabin fever while hiding from the heatwave, consider going fishing! It’s better than TV!
The same can be done with a fly rod. They love woolly buggers and hare leeches.
I’ll bet they would. They were in full blown feeding mode and were hitting bait as fast as we could get them in the water. It was a good trip, especially since the guy I took hasn’t really fished much, and doesn’t even own any gear. For some reason, he managed to catch 5 or 6 before I even got my rod in the water. ![]()
I might have to go up again this week to try it out with a fly rod.
The grass doesn’t need to be mowed.
Allan
Allan, all the grass around here is crunchy and brown already! ![]()
Which means even the lawn thinks we should go fishing!
What grass! Dogs pretty much take care of it - to the point where I traded in the gas mower for a push mower!
Ol’Blue, funny the fish quit at dark - here they don’t start until dark! We don’t quit until 3-4 am! Anyway, it sounds like you caught some bigguns, although there’s no photographic evidence to support your allegation - I’ll let it slide - this time! LOL!!
Best regards, Dave S.
Yep. Normally we start at dark, and things pick up at 10 or later and roll for most of the night. For some reason, I’ve found that during these dog days for the last several years, the fish have slipped into a daytime pattern.
Funny thing about the pictures. I got a playsport underwater video camera (it takes pictures, too) for father’s day, and my wife has decided it’s cool. She’s using it almost daily and I don’t see it much. I hope to have it for the next trip.
BTW, our heat streak continues. It was 86 at 6:30 this morning. They are looking for a high around 107. Might be a good day for catfishing!
