Headed out to one of my favorite ponds. Checked our lawn as I headed for the truck and there was a very heavy dew. Did not want to try to drive in with the new access to this pond as the land is a pasture with grass about 3 feet high. Was not sure I would be able to drive out as the exit is all uphill.
Walked into the pond and got to the place where I wanted to fish. I always do well with a black furl tailed leech and a medium brown alpaca roving fly with a gold rib in the round fly here.
The water is fairly clear and there is about 6 feet of weed and algae around the edge of the pond. Start with the black fly and get it in the water. Let the fly drop for about 5 seconds and then move it bout 2 inches and let it set for about 10 seconds. About the third time I move it I notice the line move a little. Set the hook and have a crappie come to the surface. I can see most of the fly in the mouth of the fish, so try to bring it in slowly. Do well until the fish starts to slide across the stuff at the edge of the pond. As the fish flips the hook tears out of the mouth.
Repeated this a few more times and changed to the other fly. The same thing happened, fish flipping the hook off when sliding across the weeds.
Thinking I would be smart I changed the roving fly to a size 14, hoping the take would be deeper. It is a great theory, but it did not work.
Sum of the day, 2 hours fishing. A multitude of bites. Landed 2 bluegill and one crappie. My wife asked me if I was letting the fish grow bigger? Works for me.
