where can i find the infamous tiny size 32!
is there any place where i can get them???!
thanx.
also is there a mailorder catalog that has them?
Chris,
Two-prong response to your question:
Still available in the stores is Tiemco 518 #32. While a small hook, I generally refer to it as a “Big Iron”. The gape is like a #28 hook, with a slightly shorter shank. So in essence this hook is a short-shank #28.
No longer available (only one batch produced in the early eighties) are what I would call the ‘real’ #32 hook: Mustad 277 #32. These are of a different order of magnitude. See below:
Tying on these is, eh… an educational experience 8)
Occasionally some of these hooks turn up on eBay, fetching silly prices.
Cheers,
Hans W
wow, thanks alot!
i guess my search to tie on the infamous 32, is a little thwarted.
but i bet 28 is plenty small!
Chris,
My fav small size hook to tie on, and fish with, is the Tiemco 2488, a scud hook. You can get down to #30.
Cheers,
Hans W
very cool!
i also like those 2488 hooks!.
my fly shop carrries them, so i will look for tiny ones next time.
Chris:
You wouldn’t like those old Mustad 277’s anyway. The had NO eyes!
We used to tie them up years ago as snelled flies using the also extinct Pezon et Michele 15X tippet material just for laughs.
We would fish them at the infamous “Ditch” at Big Springs just to see how many missed hooksets we could rack up, (about 10 per session); how long we could keep a fish on IF we hooked it, (about 3 seconds); or how long it took to get totally frustrated, (about 10 minutes).
On the other hand; the TMC 518 “fake 32” is a pretty effective hook and I have caught quite a few fish on them.
Good luck!
Bamboozl,
I concur on the 277 hook. While I enjoy, from time to time, to tie on them I certainly never would, or suggest anyone else would, fish them 8)
Cheers,
Hans W
size 32 might be just the thing for my neighbours KOI pond. Hmmmmmmmmm
Eric
I know this guy…NOT me you understand…
Well this guy had a brother who had an aquarium with goldfish in it…
Well, so… this guy waits until Chris, er I mean this guy’s little brother isn’t home and he puts a little blob of moist bread on the end of one of those size 32 Mustad’s attached to some leader material and a short stick.
And I, er…this guy then proceeds to catch a GOLDFISH!
It was cool…er I mean, he told me it was cool!
Yea…that’s what he told me alright…
Interesting story about goldfish…never caught any - swallowed a few, but that was about it.
Funny what “liquid courage” and some well placed jeering from your friends can accomplish.
Hans,
By chance would you have pictures of flies tied in that size? I searched you website, but so far came up empty handed.
Tyronefly,
Apologies for the sub-standard pictures - I really need to pluck up the courage again to reshoot them

Unless handled in person one just cannot fully appreciate how small the Mustad 277 #32 hooks are. They strike fear into the heart of the bravest of tiers when faced with the task of tying a fly, anyfly, on them. Even picking one up and mounting them in the vise is a nerve wrecking task LOL
Cheers,
Hans W
There have been many times while fishing and the trout were on a midge bite big time, that I have wished I had a size 32 so I could catch a midge and stick it on the hook!!
Hans,
Thanks for the link! I had no idea what could be tied on such a small hook. I figured a few wraps of thread or even a wisp of dubbing at best. Those are cool!
WOWZERS,
yea, definately sounds like i dont even want to try the official mustad 32’s.
thanx for all the great info!,i will go to the local fly shop soon.
and when i get those tiemcos i will tie some flies on them and post some pictures! not sure how my camera is gonna do with that but hey, worth a shot.
Those itty bitty flies look so cool! I can’t imagine tying one as my eyes would fall out, but really neat to see. 22 is the smallest I’ve tied.

Hans Weilenmann, I am glad you reposted those. I really like your work.
I am still tying the Tiemco 30’s and 32’s. (bought a bunch from a company that went out of business)
You are right about the gap being bigger thought, in fact the gap is the biggest part of the hook LOL.
I tie some MICRO MIDGES at shows, but I put a wire through the eye so people can hold them.
What!, no microscope?

What!, no microscope?[/quote]
LMAO…only when tying!
The hardest part about tying teeny tiny flies is seeing the darn things in the first place!
I added this light/magnifier to my bench about a year ago and love it. Gives nice, even light, with a built in magnifier when I need it:
I think I paid $60 bucks for it…you can see more details here:
